1922 Kissel Gold Bug Speedster

Often regarded as one of the most iconic motorcars of the 1920s is this 1922 Kissel 6-45 speedster. Better known as the Gold Bug, this sporty vehicle represents the style and Hollywood culture of the Jazz Age and is one of the rarest vehicles in the collector car world with an estimated approximation of 35 knows to still exist. Often regarded as the first must have car by Hollywoods elite, famous personalities such as Douglas Fairbanks, Greta Garbo, Fatty Arbuckle, Al Jolson, Jack Dempsy and more all sported a Gold Bug. This example, #45-5061 is an extremely rare variation as it is the only one of the known remaining to have a rear rumble seat. Kissel Gold Bug #45-5061 has a historic and confirmed history. Based on original existing documents and confirmed research, this 6-45 now has its complete historic linage from original owner to today, and extremely rare occurrence in the Gold Bug world. Original Owner Henry P. Kraft became lead apprentice to Augustus Schrader in 1882 worked extensively on the development and patent work of the world famous Schrader Valve for pneumatic tires. While the original 1892 patent is in Schraders name, all subsequent patents involving the invention of the Schrader System, including all necessary innovations for the automobile age are designs of Mr. H.P. Kraft. In 1922 H.P. Kraft became the president of the A. Schrader & Son Co. and rewarded himself with this 1922 Kissel Gold Bug. After Krafts untimely death in 1924, #45-5061 changed hands several times before being owned and adored by well-known Jazz Era Saxophonist Jackson Barnhart for over 4 decades.

#45-5061 was restored by its current owner over a ten-year period. An extreme amount of detail and craftsmanship went into this restoration. Multiple folders, records, and photographs document this restoration, and copies can be made available on request. The original engine, confirmed by original documentation, was professionally rebuilt by one of the most respected early engine specialists in the country.

During restoration, body wood that needed to be replaced was created using fine hand-crafted hard wood using the original pieces as a pattern. Select body panels were recreated using the originals as patterns. The aluminum side steps were recast using the originals to create the molds. Wire wheels were re-spoked by Dayton Wheel and still are the original hub centers. No expense was spared on the upholstery and top, and the vehicle is refinished the Gold Bugs signature yellow. The vehicle is currently available for inspection at the Owls Head Transportation by scheduling an appointment with auction staff. To date, it has been only driven 13 miles post restoration, all on OHTM property, and will need its proper post restoration break in process continued by its next caretaker.
