Introduced in 1950 the Plymouth Suburban’s primary feature was its versatility. As clearly outlined in the Suburban’s brochure, Plymouth called it “The car with one hundred and one uses.”. No other utility car of the time offered such all-around transportation features. As you settle into the driver’s seat and peer over your shoulder you’re struck by the commodious interior space behind you. With the back seat up, the Suburban boasts 42 inches of cargo area from the tailgate forward. Lowering the back seat expands the available space to nearly six feet. The Plymouth may be upright and boxy with looks that are something of an acquired taste, but the visibility is excellent thanks to many large windows. Included with the Suburban is the original vehicle invoice…a piece of paper that is 78 years old! The invoice shows the selling price of $1,786 for the sporty wagon. Options were sparse in 1950 with this Suburban being upfitted only with a windshield wiper and bumper guards for a total cost of $10.55. Automatic transmissions, and even overdrive, were still a few years in the future when this Suburban was built, so like all 1950 Plymouths, this one has a three-speed manual transmission with column controls. Depress the floor-mounted clutch pedal, slip the gear selector into neutral and twist the ignition and the flathead six springs to life. There's no roar, bellow or cam bounce, but the little six-cylinder engine is quiet, smooth and eager to please. This exquisite Plymouth received a comprehensive restoration in the mid-nineties, although shows like a recent effort. The Suburban, finished in Brunswick Blue lacquer, looks and runs just like it did when it rolled off the assembly line well over a half century ago. Purchased from the original owner in 1987 the Suburban has been lovingly cared for by its second owner ever since and has spent its entire life in South Carolina. Don’t miss your chance to own the original sport utility vehicle produced by Plymouth. Seeing a 1933 Plymouth 5-Window Coupe is already going to attract attention just because of how few of these there are on the scene. But as you dig deeper on this steel-bodied custom, youll discover nice upgrades like the polished suspension and rumble seat. So you soon realize this is far more unique than just its nameplate. The all steel body is in fantastic condition, with the kind of fitting that can take home the trophies. As mentioned before, the Plymouth name alone will attract attention in the pre-war crowds, but you can also appreciate some great styling touches it brings. For example, when the fiberglass hood is in place, there is a great style line that starts near the headlights and runs all the way down the body until it flows into the rear. Theres bright work in all the right places, including the tall waterfall grille, headlight surrounds, vented windshield frame, door handles, and the tubular rear bumper. Its all finished in an aggressive red. Its the kind of paintwork that looks like this car is meant to be driven, and the American Racing Torq Thrust wheels with an aggressive 15/17 front/rear stagger back up this impression. Inside is a great custom cruiser attitude. The black vinyl has some terrific patterns as it flows over the dash, door panels, and low-back bucket seats. While most hot rod coupes are built for two, this one retains the extra cool rumble-seats. So this one is great for everything from parades to a night at the driver-in. No matter how many people are along for the ride, youll appreciate features like the AM/FM/CD stereo, Stewart Warner gauge package, and a tilt steering column built for even tall drivers. The engine bay is out for people to see, and thats for a very good reason. The shine from the valve covers, air topper, alternator, upgraded pulleys, and more makes this worth showing off. Beyond the flash, theres the substance of a Chevy 350 cubic-inch small block V8 that has been upgraded with pieces like a mild cam, Holley four-barrel carburetor, shorty headers, and rumbling dual exhaust. Theres even an aluminum radiator w/electric fan to help keep this package running cool even in traffic. As you look at the undercarriage photos youll see some nice upgrades with polished components in the drop axle front, driveshaft, and rear suspension. Plus, theres also a three-speed automatic transmission and front disc brakes, so you can enjoy this street machine with ease. If youre a Mopar fan or just a fan of being a little different, this awesome Plymouth is a head-turner with plenty of premium features. So hurry up on this distinct and irresistible hot rod. When it comes to wood-sided station wagons Ford seems to get all the glory, but Plymouths P-15 model woodies were equally nice, extremely well built and thoroughly rugged. They definitely gave Ford a run for their money. Such is the case for the rare one we have here at Skyway Classics. It is painted in green with a tan interior with saddle blanket seat covers. Like nearly all cars of the era, the 1947 wagons were based on Plymouths 1942 model, which they were building right before World War II started but halted due to the fighting; so although the cars are five years apart; essentially they are the same car. While the main body structure was steel, the roof was a complex construction of wood slats that were then covered with an embossed black vinyl-like material that helped make the interior weatherproof. The wood used for the paneling is a combination of white ash and mahogany, both structurally very strong and aesthetically attractive. Similar to most other automobiles, a flathead engine powers this car, a straight-six powerplant with the Plymouth version displacing 217.8 cubic inches. Fed by a small single-barrel Carter carburetor, it makes 95hp and 172-lbs.ft. of torque. It has front and rear drum brakes, which for the speeds they travel are fine, stopping the car straight and true. The interior upholstery is equally as simple, being just flat vinyl stretched across a tubular metal frame, with saddle blanket seat covers on them. And the interior door panels are a single piece of wood, while the floor pan is covered with a rubber mat on green carpet. This Woody Wagon we have at Skyway Classics is a time capsule of a car that was sold just after all the Vets came home from WW2. This car is extremely rare and it is a sight for sore eyes if you can remember the cars from that era. So give us a call at 941-254-6608. We also finance!
