Cars like this 1962 Ford Galaxie 500XL are why Ford was dominating on the NASCAR circuits. It still wears its formal hardtop roofline, packs a potent 406 under the hood, and a 4-speed between the seats, making it a serious full-sized factory muscle car from before there were muscle cars. Nicely finished in nasty black with a gorgeous red interior, its an upscale cruiser that can still hand out beatings on the street. Repainted several years ago and still looking great, theres no way to make a Galaxie look bad. Ford hit the styling out of the ballpark, with crisp lines and those big, round taillights that reflected the 60s enthusiasm for the jet age. The paint went down over well-prepped sheetmetal, and even on those massive quarter panels, theres nary a ripple. The finish is expertly done and shows no major flaws and has a shine that seems perfectly appropriate on these cars. Professional workmanship makes it stand out and the other guys at the show will always be frustrated when this car shows up because itll attract all the attention. All the trim (and there is a lot of it) is in excellent condition. Both bumpers appear to have been re-chromed, and the long stainless strips that frame the sides of the car are straight and bright. This one also proudly wears a 406 badge, which reflects the engine living under the hood, but lets not get ahead of ourselves just yet. A 4-speed with bucket seats and a console is a cool industrial-strength early muscle car look, and it works well in the Galaxie. Since the original interior was code 88 Light Gold, everything in the car was replaced when the rest of the car was refinished, so it remains in outstanding condition with no damage or overt signs of aging. The deeply pleated seats show exceptional detailing, which is often lacking in aftermarket seat covers, and even the metal buttons in the seatbacks have been retained. This one remains almost entirely stock aside from an AM/FM/cassette radio in the dash, although the gauges under the dash are probably mandatory on a horsepower factory like this. The 3-spoke wheel fits the Galaxies personality perfectly, and that 4-speed Hurst cue ball shifter on the console makes a bold statement in a full-sized luxury car. Gentlemans hot rod indeed! The trunk is highly authentic, with a reproduction mat, full-sized spare, and a correct jack assembly. As I mentioned, there are 406 badges on the side and thats the size of the engine, even though it stated out as a Z-code 390. Rebuilt and topped by a factory-style tri-power setup, its dressed to look like 1962 and runs like a freight train. Dressed in black with gold Thunderbird valve covers, its the ultimate early 60s powerplant if youre a Ford fan, both muscular and refined, making the performance seem almost effortless. Theres an oval air cleaner for the carbs and the sound when you crack open all six barrels has to be experienced. Beautifully tuned, settles into an even 750 RPM idle with only a hint of the cam inside burbling through the dual exhaust system. The 4-speed snaps through the gears, and the entire car feels robust and sturdy, as if it could take the abuse all day. With 3.50 gears in the 9-inch rear end, its an easy highway cruiser, too. The chassis is clean and shows no signs of distress, and it wears 15-inch steelies with 235/70/15 blackwall radials that look butch and stuff the wheel wells properly. Fast with class, thats the Galaxies motto, and this one shows you why. If youre a Ford fan, few cars can match the 406 Galaxies reputation. Call today!
Some cars are interesting all by themselves, and others are interesting for the stories they can tell, but the very best cars offer both. This 1968 Ford Galaxie XL fastback is, by itself, a very cool car, but if youre of the dare-to-be-different crowd, it will really stand out. Always a dry, southern car, this Galaxie has never needed any major metal surgery, and when the time came to refresh the finish, little more than a few hours of block sanding were required. Of course, they went with something subtle like 1968s Pebble Beige, and as you can see from the photos, this one was done pretty well. Its not perfect, of course, but it certainly has the right look for a car that just passed its 50th birthday and is ready for 50 more. The soft paint contrasts beautifully with the aggressive fastback shape, making a car thats at once elegant and brutal, which was surely Fords intent. The front end was completely redesigned in 1968, dramatically changing the looks of the car and taking it upscale and youd better believe most of the changes were aimed at improving performance (the Galaxie was Fords NASCAR weapon of choice). Those sculpted fenders that kick up behind the doors give the car an sophistication that only gets better the more you look at it. The finish is very good, and we love that it doesnt have the usual vinyl top, making it look very clean and sleek. The handsome interior offers accommodations for five, which is what full-sized cars were all about. Pretty parchment seat covers, door panels, and headliner look great with the darker carpets, making it feel upscale and well-designed inside. The instrument panel is a cool pod ahead of the driver with the gauges hidden behind a textured fascia and an AM radio perched up high. Auxiliary controls are integrated into a band of burled walnut that runs from end to end, and matches the insert on the steering wheel, which has a few cracks but still looks good. Factory A/C is a nice find and makes this an awesome cruiser, especially with that giant back seat thats comfortable enough for full-sized adults. One look in the gigantic trunk will convince you that someone truly loved this car, because its exceptionally clean and includes a full-sized spare and jack assembly. Power comes from a correct F-code 302 cubic inch V8, which makes plenty of torque and moves the fastback with effortless ease. An aluminum intake manifold and Holley 4-barrel carburetor replace the original Autolite 2-barrel setup so it runs great and offers a smooth idle and a great V8 burble from the twin tailpipes. Its not over-detailed, but it has a well-maintained look with proper Ford Blue on the engine itself along with a factory air cleaner with correct 302 decal on top. A big radiator keeps things cool and theres a brand new dual exhaust system underneath. The 3-speed automatic transmission shifts easily and gives it a smooth luxury car feel, and feeds a heavy-duty 9-inch rear. Check out the solid floors, new shocks, and power front disc brakes, too. Those very cool Magnum 500 wheels carry fat 235/70/15 BFGoodrich tires that give it a sporty look. This Galaxie is a very appealing and very unusual piece of luxury muscle, all at a very reasonable price. Call us today!
Full-sized Fords represent one of the biggest bangs for the buck in the hobby right now, and you can pick up cars like this handsome 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible for a fraction of the cost of their bowtie competitors. With a smooth V8, room for five adults, and plenty of flash, this big red Galaxie suddenly starts to make a lot of sense. Theres one repaint on the car and it fairly accurately replicates the original Rangoon Red finish. The older paint job has a great shine and looks right on the squared-off bodywork and if we didnt know better, we might believe it was original. The full-sized Galaxie was totally redesigned for 1965, starting with a set of stacked headlights and an overall lighter, sleeker look. Thats not to say its smaller, because this is still a very big car, but the trim bodywork makes it feel a lot more maneuverable. We believe the 70,619 miles showing are authentic, and given that the car has been used regularly and never really restored, the sheetmetal is in fantastic shape with no nasty surprises underneath. The doors close easily and all the little details that make Fords top-of-the-line cars so special are still there, from the stand-up hood ornament to the stainless rim running from nose to tail to the squared-off taillights that make it easy to recognize from a mile away. If you want a car thats ideal for just getting in and going somewhere, this Galaxie delivers. Theres evidence that the two-tone red interior is original to the car, and that should give you a better idea of just how well-preserved this car really is. The first owner kept it for more than 30 years, so you know it was special, and while theres a bit of wear on the drivers seat, no reproduction covers can match the factorys level of detail. Theres a bit of fading on the carpets, which isnt surprising with red, and the steering wheel is showing some age even with the red leather wrap. Factory gauges are bright and crisp, and we love the way the original AM radio is integrated into the design (although its sadly not functional). The recent white power convertible top stows itself in seconds and includes a crystal clear rear window and the giant trunk includes a correct plaid mat and a full-sized spare. Power comes from Fords reliable, rugged X-code 352 cubic inch V8, which we believe is the cars original powerplant. Still wearing Ford Blue on the air cleaner and valve covers, its just a deep cleaning away from being ready to show off and there are plenty of indicators that all three owners were conscientious about maintenance. It starts easily, idles well, and pulls the ragtop around with genuine enthusiasm, all the while feeling rugged and eager, something that cant be said for a lot of other cars of the period. At a glance you can see things like fresh ignition components, new belts and hoses, and correct decals on the engine itself, all signs that the owners liked to keep it healthy. Power steering and power brakes are welcome additions and the heavy-duty 3-speed automatic transmission always seems to find the right gear (remember to use the green dot on the selector!). A recent dual exhaust system sounds suitably muscular without being annoying and its extremely clean underneath, so no worries there. Stylish hubcaps look a lot like period mag wheels and carry 15-inch whitewall radials. Well wager that this car wont last long. Big Fords are suddenly very popular, whether its because of their great road manners or their reasonable prices, we cant say, but this big red Galaxie has enough of both to make it very appealing. This is the era when the coupes were big, fast, and brilliant. This 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 has a distinct color combo and V8 power all wrapped in a vintage fastback body built for cruising. Those who know Fords, know how special this car is. 1963 was the first year Ford had a little fun with aerodynamics, and they introduced the fastback roofline to better compete in NASCAR. And this sporty attitude is continued on the bright work double strips that run the length of the car, concave grille, wraparound bumpers, and jet-inspired taillight trim. It even has iconic Mag wheels for an extra bit of sporty flair. But what you might like best is the paint. The B-code Pagoda Green was added to the palette as a bright and cheery color for spring only. It would only be available again on Ford cars as special editions. The two-tone of the interior almost looks like they mixed the blue and turquoise to create the exterior color, and so this is a very well-coordinated total package. As a full-sized car of the 60s, youll have no trouble fitting plenty of family and friends. But even if youre driving all alone, this Ford provides lots of appeal. The upgraded three-spoke steering wheel has plenty of grip, and the long horizontal speedometer is flanked by the round gauge pods. Plus, this cool cruiser has plenty of factory bright work to remind you of the chrome king era. Fords small block 289 V8 is terrific for providing plenty of power, and the glass pack dual exhaust gives a hint of its NASCAR pedigree. The motor looks like it has received the right care, and its not just because of the polished valve covers and air topper. The details like the belts and wires have the kind of look that tell you someone has looked after the motor. Plus, with power steering, an automatic transmission, and the modern grip of Uniroyal Tiger Paw GTS tires, this classic coupe is still a fine cruiser today. This cool Galaxie 500 fastback is truly a noteworthy classic hardtop. So if you want affordable distinction, dont let this deal slip away. Call now!

This 1962 Ford Galaxie 500XL Convertible is for sale ion our Louisville KY showroom. The Galaxie was Ford s answer to GM s extremely popular Impala. The Galaxie 500 nameplate was added to the 59 Fairlane as a top of the line trim level in 1959. In 1960 it became its own car with its own style and engine packages. This 62 is a great example of what you would expect in 1962. The white paint is in excellent condition with the simple flick of a switch activating the power top. With the top out of the way an extremely nice stock black vinyl interior is easily exposed. With the buckets eats upfront separated by a console which houses the shifter a rare option for 62. The white paint is clean and shows extremely well with the chrome fender skirts complimenting that old school look. The trim ties in with those big chrome bumpers while black accents bring it all together. Open that long hood and one of the cleanest engine compartments I have seen is glaring back at you. The FE series 352 gets the car going down the road nicely with plenty of low end grunt to get you going. Drop that shifter into drive and let the cruise-o-matic do the rest. Shifting through all 3 gears nicely this car is meant to hit the road and cruise. If you have been wanting to get a classic 60 s era drop top that runs as good as it looks this 62 Galaxie is the one for you. Options on this 1962 Ford Galaxie 500XL convertible include, AM Radio, Power Steering, Power Top, Hubcaps, and Radial Tires. Gateway Classic Cars is pleased to offer this 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 XL for sale in our Indianapolis showroom. Powered by a 352 cubic inch V8 and presented in a striking combination of gleaming black exterior and red interior, this long, low 2 door has the presence now that it had in 1963 fast, sleek, and a great place to be while eating up the highway miles or just cruising around town. The interior has completely new carpet, seatcovers, door panels, headliner, horn ring and center, seat belts, scuff plates, and visor arms. The dash and rear package shelf have been repainted. Beginning in 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with 500 and 500/XL denoting the higher series. The 1963 model was essentially unchanged save for some freshening and added trim; windshields were reshaped and a lower, fastback roofline was added mid-year to improve looks and make the big cars more competitive on the NASCAR tracks with less drag and reduced aerodynamic lift at high speed. This 1963 model, the industrys first official year model, was called the sports hardtop or fastback. Galaxie buyers showed their preference as the new sports hardtop models handily outsold the boxtop square-roof models. The sports hardtop was available in both Galaxie 500, and Galaxie 500/XL trim. If you stop to think about it, it is really unfair to call full-size cars from the late Sixties and early Seventies land cruisers or boats. The fact is, a lot people actually prefer driving these stretches of iron to todays less charismatic, but equally large, keep up with the Joneses SUVs. One great example is this 1970 Ford XL convertible! Built on a 121-inch wheelbase with a full frame and more than enough room under the hood for a V8. It is still a full 10 inches shorter than the 2007 Ford Expedition. The XL s which had finally been set free from the Galaxie family in 1969 retained its near decade-long sporty heritage, thanks to just two body styles: a two-door fastback coupe, and the convertible. The hidden headlamps are divided into three sections, thanks to a pronounced V in the center of the grille. A sculptured ridge in the hood fans out slightly as you look from forward to aft, matching the center section of the grille at the nose of the hood. The side molding has been relocated from 1969 to a higher position, and the rear grille was toned down in favor of a cleaner rear fascia with new taillamps. Powering this rare beauty is a potent 390 cubic inch V8 that provides plenty of power and allows this XL to cruise down any road with lots of confidence. Backing the engine in this Ford is the optional Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission, shifted on the column, which replaced the standard-issue three-speed manual in all XL models except those equipped with the 429s. Drop the white top and you are treated to a maroon interior that is very spacious. One of the best features of this car is definitely the interior, mainly because it is very driver oriented. Rather than a flat dash layout that stretches from driver side to passenger, the driver side completely focuses on the driver. With all of the controls being within an arm s length it makes driving this 1970 Ford Xl a whole different experience. We are super-thrilled offer for sale this eye-catching 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 Sunliner (convertible) in our Saint Louis Showroom of Gateway Classic Cars. The next owner of this beauty will be fortunate enough to inherit the REO Speedwagon 8-Track cassette tape that you can see sticking out of the player. BACKGROUND: The Ford Galaxie is a full-sized car that was built in the United States of America by Ford for model years 1959 through to 1974. The name was used for the top models in Fords full-size range from 1958 until 1961, in a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race. For 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with 500 and 500/XL denoting the higher series. Ford stated in its sales literature that XL stood for Xtra Lively. In 1962 the new top-line Galaxie 500 (two-door sedan and hardtop, four-door sedan and hardtop, and Sunliner convertible) models offered plusher interiors, more chrome trim outside, and a few additional luxury items over and above what was standard on the plainer Galaxie models. (source: Wikipedia) This particular 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 Sunliner is now on its third owner and has been in the same family for a significant amount of time. By appearances and testimony, this Galaxie looks to be an original survivor with a number-matching engine and transmission that has never been rebuilt. So, you are looking at something unique and valuable here. One of the things to get very excited about with this 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 Sunliner is how well maintained the interior condition is. The seats and inside door panels have all been tightly fitted with plastic to protect them from wear and damage. The dash is in great shape and does not show any fading or wear. With exception to the temp gauge, all the other gauges show well and function appropriately. As you can witness in the video, the convertible top opens and closes smooth and tight. The exterior body is in good condition. Upon our inspection we didnt notice any disqualifying damage or corrosive rust. The chrome trim is still in good condition, as well as the red body paint; albeit, showing swirls from years of buffing.
