Description 1991 MERCEDES BENZ 500 SL History The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a grand touring car manufactured by Mercedes since 1954. The designation SL derives from the German Sportlich-Leicht, (Sport Lightweight). The original idea was suggested by American importer Max Hoffman, who perceived a market for a toned-down Gran Prix car tailored to affluent performance enthusiasts in the booming post-war American market, which remains the primary market for the vehicles Why This Car Is Special Ever since the launch of the original 300 SL Gullwing back in 1954, the SL has always been Mercedes-Benzs flagship sports car. The fourth generation SL, which the 1991 Mercedes Benz 500 SL that we have at Skyway Classics is, had the fresh, aerodynamic styling and packed with high-tech features it came with back in 1991. Mechanical As ever, safety was paramount in our 500 and the innovative new automatic roll bar, activated in a split second in the event of a rollover, was one of the first seen on any passenger car. The folding soft top was now powered by an electro-hydraulic system, activated at the touch of a button and taking just 30 seconds to raise or lower. Our 500SL came with a 32-valve, DOHC V8 motor under the hood and the engine compartment is very clean and detailed. It has all the correct factory parts like air cleaner assembly, ram air system, belts, hoses, and accessories. The R129s suspension has a sophisticated five-arm multi-link set-up at the rear and an Adaptive Damping System, with ABS. Interior The plush tan leather interior on our 500 SL is suitably well appointed, with luxury features like leather upholstery, airbags, electric seats, automatic climate control and a Bose sound system on certain models, along with electric windows and even a wind deflector. As a sophisticated sports roadster, the R129 SL represents excellent value and these early cars also have the advantage of the superb build quality Daimler Benz was renowned for. Exterior The bright red paint makes sure you pay attention to this German sports car like you should.Body lines are great as well as all the trim. It rides on performance tires mounted on factory eight spoke wheels. The tan top matches the interior and makes for a great looking package. Conclusion With 326 horsepower on tap, the 500SL we have here at Skyway Classics certainly packs a punch and delivers serious performance. Autocar magazine recorded an 0-60 mph time of just 5.9 seconds on the way to a top speed limited to 155 mph. The magazine went on to describe the model as close to flawless in their road test. To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys Paris event, 6 February 2019. Offered from the Youngtimer CollectionVery rare pre-merger AMG 6.0 modelEquipped with matching factory hardtopBuilt to replace the long-running and outdated R107, the Mercedes-Benz R129 models were announced in 1989. Produced as a two-door, two-seat roadster with an automated soft top and a colour-matched aluminium detachable hard top, the R129 was offered in several models, including the 500 SL. As in the past, AMG offered a variety of engine performance packages for those clients who wanted extra power; however, beginning in 1990, AMG and Mercedes-Benz had signed a co-operation agreement allowing AMG options to be offered in Mercedes-Benz showrooms. Thus, the R129 is the first Mercedes-Benz to be offered with official AMG versions. Offered here is one of those early AMGs, built during the co-operation years before the official merger. At its heart is a bored and stroked version of the standard Mercedes-Benz M119 5-litre V-8 engine. Increased to 6.0 litres, the engine develops 380 bhp, up from 322 from standard. Additions such as the colour-matched monoblock wheels, a lip spoiler, glossy wood trim interior and colour-shifting blue-black paint all signal that this is not your standard R129. Some sources state that just 50 pre-merger 6.0s were made, and it is much more common to find an AMG-tuned R129 after the 1993 facelift. Incredibly rare, very driveable this is a car for any discerning collector.
