History of the Ferrari TestarossaThe Ferrari Testarossa was developed beginning in the late 1970’s as a successor to the BB model. While Ferrari originally intended to give the 512BBi a subtle facelift, it soon became apparent that the model would no longer meet emission requirements in the U.S. and thus a completely new model had to be developed. Ferrari turned to the research team at Pininfarina to design the new car. Heading the project was Leonardo Fioravanti, who previously designed the P5, P6 and the 365 GTB/4 “Daytona.” The name “Testarossa” (translated as “Red Head”) was named after a series of 1950’s racing cars that had red painted camshaft covers, a feature that Ferrari’s new Testarossa would inherit. The finished car was unveiled to the public during the 1984 Paris Motor Show at the famed Lido nightclub. With a 390 horsepower 4.9 liter flat-12 engine, the Testarossa was good for a 0-60 mph time of 5 seconds and pushed speeds of 180 mph. Its legendary performance and iconic Pininfarina lines spoke to a generation of enthusiasts, in part to making numerous appearances across all forms of media, including a starring role in the popular television show “Miami Vice” starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. Please visit www.schmitt.com to view our full inventory.

On June 17th of 1991, it would go home with its first owner who lived in San Mateo, California. The Ferrari would remain in California over the course of close to three decades and would be driven sparingly. They would keep the Testarossa for more than 20 years, keeping the car meticulously maintained by Modena Motors in Redwood City, with service documents back to 1991. During their ownership, he would only add 6,900 miles to the odometer. At 7,478 miles, the car would receive a full engine out service, including valve adjustment and all belts, as well as host of other maintenance items. Work was done by GP Enterprises LLC of Redwood City, California. Upon arriving at Canepa, the Testarossa was given a full mechanical and cosmetic inspection. With the car deemed mechanically sound, the Ferrari was then treated to a concours level detail with nothing left untouched. The chassis was cleaned from tip to tip, bringing the underside back to how it left the Maranello Ferrari factory. The interior, trunk and engine compartment were hand cleaned leaving nothing short of spotless, and the exteriors original paint was polished to a stunning shine. With a matching numbers engine, low mileage, spectacular original condition and a recent major engine out service, this Ferrari Testarossa is an excellent representation of the Prancing Horse of the era.
