One owner nearly all its life! This 1974 Volkswagen Thing purchased almost new in March 1976 while in Omaha, Nebraska, then traveled to Aspen, Colorado for his retirement years! Always garaged, and driven an average of only 240 miles per year. Today, it shows only 11,144 actual miles! One exterior repaint with original interior upholstery! Complete with beautiful top and side curtains, wood floor panels, factory radio, and records back to 1976! Super solid and quickly becoming a nice futureinvestment! Built for the United States buyers from 1973-1974 as the Type 181, it was known as The Thing. As published in the Volkswagen literature Good for fun and good for work. Good for the city and good for the country. Good off-the-road and good on-the-road. At last a car that can be anything- The Thing! It was designed to be topless, door-less, and with an optional folding windscreen & fold down rear seats, it could be transformed into just about any configuration, and virtually ready for any weather condition even if you leave the convertible top at home with a rain ready interior! For this reason, finding a reasonable solid and well cared for unit today can be a bit tough. We think you will find this example quite the exception! Offered here is a 1974 Volkswagen Thing finished in factory correct Canary Yellow with Black Vinyl interior, along with white top and side curtains! Power comes from its original 1600cc Horizontal 4 cylinder engine (#AM017532) & Solex 34 PICT-3 carburetor (Tag #181129027L) and 4-speed manual transmission. Options are abundant and include locking glove box door, locking gas cap, wood-slatted floor covering front & rear, heater, dual outside chrome mirrors, chrome wheel covers, radial tires measuring 185/75R14, full roll bar, and sun visors! This example was last owned for 42 years by the same owner! William S. Latta purchased it March 18th, 1976 out of Omaha, Nebraska at Dillion-Anderson Motors Inc. with only limited mileage on the odometer. He retired soon afterward, and moved to Aspen, Colorado where this Thing would be preserved and garage kept until we came to own it in 2018! Adding approximately 240 miles during the Colorado driving season, he also made sure it was serviced regularly. Provided with the car will be his early sales documentation, service records, original Colorado title copy, emissions receipts, 2 sets of keys, and more! Today, the odometer shows just 11,144 actual miles! The car has been repainted professionally years ago with show worthy results still today, while the interior upholstery remains original. Seatbelts have been added for safety, along with a Blaupunkt Laguna AM/FM/CD radio. Upon arrival to the St. Louis Car Museum, this 1974 Volkswagen Thing was serviced to include new front brake hoses, all new brake fluid, new spark plugs, ceramic-coated exhaust system from CarCraft of Riverside, CA, exhaust manifold gasket, chrome exhaust tips, new engine oil/filter, and test driven for approximately 10 miles. It is a remarkable example throughout, with one of the most solid chassis we have seen in quite some time! It is ready to pass on to the next lucky owner, and we invite interested parties to call to schedule a chance to review it in person! Act quickly! This one has all the right investment criteria!
To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys Arizona event, 17 - 18 January 2019. Estimate:$15,000 - $25,000 Offered from the Torque CollectionDerived from VW s military Kubelwagen designInteresting outlaw modificationsAdjustable air suspensionA delightful weekend plaything Nobody can say for sure how many examples of the Type 181 or Type 182 the right-hand-drive version were constructed; estimates vary from about 70,000 to twice that number. What is known is that the open-topped Type 181 was dubbed the Thing for the U.S. market, and some 25,000 units were sold here from 1972 to 1974. They were popular in sunnier climes and their bright colors Blizzard White, Sunshine Yellow, and Pumpkin Orange, all with black leatherette interiors and tops shouted Fun! The 181 was based on the VW Kubelwagen, an off-road vehicle first offered to the German military. The steel body featured four seats, removable doors and windows, a folding windshield, and a single round instrument containing a speedometer and fuel gauge. The rear-mounted, air-cooled boxer four and four-speed manual transaxle were borrowed from the Type 1 Beetle. A gas heater was optional. The front suspension was conventional Volkswagen, with torsion bars and trailing arms. Originally Type 181s were fitted with a Portal rear axle design similar to the VW transporter to give additional ground clearance and off-road appropriate reduction gearing. When the 181 was offered to the civilian market in 1973, that layout was replaced with more conventional half-shafts.This example, sourced from its original Arizona owner in early 2016, proudly displays its original Alpine Green paint with just the right patina. It was then modified in a Rat-Rod like motif by air-cooled expert Doug Turnbull Autosports for the consignor. The 1,600-cc single-carb VW motor was serviced in late 2018. This example has been modified with a stainless-steel exhaust (custom bumper exit), adjustable air suspension, new shocks, tie rods, ball joints, spindles, and a set of authentic Porsche Fuchs alloy wheels. This car s complete maintenance history, receipts for the modifications, and original manuals are included. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/az19.
This is one of the best restored Things in the country. These are so desirable and for many good reasons. The funnest car you can imagine driving. Going down the road with top down, doors off, windshield folded is so exhilarating. Perfect car for any type of vacation home or the beach. Very capable of off road. They are so easy to drive and maintain. Fits 5 passengers plus their belongings or the rear seats fold flat for plenty of cargo space. Truly a people pleaser, you will get more smiles and waves then with any other car. Kids especially love going for a ride. Ive driven everything from the Batmobile to a Hemi Cuda and nothing is as fun as the Thing! Its about time that somebody restored one to this level. It was done on a rotisserie, completely redone top to bottom in and out along with some very nice upgrades. EXTERIOR: The body has no rust or damage. Painted a very glossy smooth yellow. New 15 inch custom chrome wheels with cone center caps on performance Kumho tires. INTERIOR: The inside has been completely painted gloss yellow with gloss black floors. It has the Swiss cheese style floor mats. Upgrades include a remote control Pioneer stereo system, oil pressure and oil temperature gauge cluster neatly added under the dash and theres a tachometer. It also has upgraded Empi shifter. It has new visors, speakers in back, interior light works. ENGINE COMPARTMENT: Theres a huge upgrade in here. It now has a 2310 CC stroker motor, this thing sounds like a V8. It features dual carbs with electric chokes, custom exhaust, performance ignition, remote oil breather and a whole lot of chrome. All the components are new or rebuilt. New wiring. The engine bay is painted gloss yellow, new weatherstrip seal. TRUNK COMPARTMENT: Completely painted yellow, has a carpeted liner, new rubber gasket. There are storage bags for the side windows. UNDERSIDE: Even the bottom is completely restored to show quality. The floor pan has zero rust and is painted gloss black, the inner fenders are gloss yellow. Everything is new- every nut and bolt, grommet etc. Front and rear independant suspension is completely rebuilt, painted and detailed. Has KYB gas shocks front and back. Disc brakes with stainless braided brake hoses upfront. Bottom of the motor and trans are spotless. Custom exhaust is polished and powder coated. New horn up front. The Thing was the German version of the Jeep, it has a high ground clearance and the motor sits over the rear axle for good traction. Its ready for the beach literally, drive right into the beach. Man, I wish it was summer!!! Hard side windows Removable doors Fold down windshield Chrome wheels Stereo Empi shifter Tachometer Fold flat seats

Recently invested more money on significant upgrades for my Thing which are listed near the bottom of this AD description. Its now almost fully restored and like having a brand new and improved Thing! I reinstalled an original Factory Hard Top and the Sliding Glass Side Curtain Windows from The Thing Shop. Ive installed many VW Factory/VW approved Dealer Options on my Thing. Also, its been professionally rust proofed! Ill consider all offers including trades. If you want a plain stock looking under powered VW Thing then this one is not for you. However, if you want an exhilarating, fun to drive, high performance, safe to drive, slightly, but, tastefully modified VW Thing then this is the one for you! What I have for sale is a new and improved low mileage VW Thing with about 62,000 original miles, and is not a rust bucket nor a Bondo Buggy. Its one of the nicest Things youll find anywhere and definitely one of the best youll find east of the Mississippi River. The engine has a high performance camshaft and crankshaft which makes it have about twice as much power as a stock VW Things Type 1 Engine! Also, the Engine Block is the best Type 1 Engine Block and is a late 1970s Super Beetle Fuel Injected Engine Block. My Thing starts, runs and drives very well. Actually, my Thing is extremely rare because the original color is Avacado Green and a very small number of Things with this color were imported into the USA for one year - 1974. Who ever buys my Thing might want to consider repainting it back to its original Avacado Green color. However, the current color is actually a very unique custom, but, pleasing to look at Maroon/Grape color. Ive only seen one other Thing with a Maroon color so my car definitely stands out! Its been well maintained by a certified VW Mechanic who knows VW air cooled engines. Ive had a lot of work done to my Thing since I purchased it and have bought many parts for it; many of them are OEM Parts or are VW Factory Option and VW Approved Dealer Factory Option components from The Thing Shop in Arizona. I have all the receipts for everything including a new VW Thing Owners Manual and complete Service Manual. The list of parts Ive purchased and all work Ive done to my Thing since I bought it about 2 years ago is too long to mention everything. Here are some of the highlights: The previous Winter I had my mechanic remove the engine and go through it thoroughly whereby he replaced all the critical seals, adjusted the valves and tuned the carb. My mechanic re adjusted the valves and installed a new European made Weber Double Barrel Progressive Carb and larger Intake Manifold recently with new Rubber Intake Manifold Boots. Ive only used Valvoline VR1 High Temperature Racing Oil in my Things engine since I purchased it and have changed the oil every six months including just recently. Just had my mechanic remove the engine again and installed new Motor Mounts, Transmission Mount, Main Seal, Exhaust Manifold Gaskets, Sachs Clutch Disc, Throw Out Bearing with Retaining Clips, Throw Out Bearing Fork Shaft, Clutch Operating Lever with Cable. New Engine Parts: Pertronix USA Made Distributor with the Flame Thrower Electronic Ignition Module and matching Flame Thrower Coil - installed Voltage Regulator - Recently removed because I installed a new 55 AMP Alternator with a built in Voltage Regulator and the external one I removed will come with car if you want it.
