This car was purchased from the prior owner in April of 1986 with just over 35,000 miles. It currently has just under 71,000 miles and I have all service records since 1986. It has been garage-kept and there is NO RUST on the car. The dash has cracked in a few places over time; a common issue with these cars. The door panels and seat covers are MB-Tex vinyl and are in excellent condition. I replaced the seat cushions years ago with the correct MB coconut fiber cushions and they are still firm and supportive, as the photos show. The loop-pile carpet has held up well. The hardtop headliner is original and is in superior condition. The canvas soft top, believed to be original, is also in great condition! All weather strip rubber is original and in very good condition. Everything works except for the clock. I fitted the car with European headlamps back in ‘86, but I kept the original round headlamp units, which will convey with the sale if desired. Likewise, I kept the original Becker Europa radio which will also convey, if desired. The engine has been maintained to the most demanding standards and continues to run very strong. As components occasionally failed or wore out over the years, they were replaced with only OEM Mercedes Benz parts to maintain factory standards. This is the last model year before the horsepower-robbing catalytic converters were mandated on US-spec cars. You can absolutely find a cheaper priced SL, but finding one that is completely rust-free, and that has been consistently maintained to the highest standards, complete with records to prove it will be challenging!NOTE: I will respond only to phone calls, so if you are interested or would like additional information, please call me directly. I will not respond to texts or emails. When the car is sold I will immediately remove the ad; thus, if the ad is posted, the car is available.
The Mercedes 450SL was a special model that spanned over many years and has the classic and elegant lines that you would expect out of a Mercedes. The 450 gave you the powerful V8 and a 3 speed automatic transmission that shifts with ease and can reach highway speeds and still get great gas mileage.GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this 1974 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL roadster for your consideration. The car runs and drives well and goes down the road straight. The car rides on 14 inch chrome wheels with white letter tires. The car comes with shop manuals, owners manual, maintenance booklet, AM/FM/Cassette, power brakes, power steering, spare tire and jack. Cosmetically the car shows very well for its age. The hard top and soft top remain in good condition.Driving the test drive, the vehicle revealed a car that still performs and shifts through the gears with ease and without hesitation. Car brakes and corners with superior performance and is a dream to drive on any road. The best part of these cars are the fantastic fit and finish that has never been duplicated by any other manufacturer, when you shut the door, it sounds as is the safe in your local bank is coming closed. The hand built Mercedes of this era will never be replicated and are continuing to see significant appreciation over the past few years and is a very wise investment in todays market.
Years of use have left this car with an overall well-worn patina. Interior is showing some age, and an exterior finish of repaint that was performed several years ago. The good news is a potential buyer is starting with a car that if restored will always increase in value, because of the period it was built. Exterior Overall fair condition Dolphin Blue paint covers the exterior. Panels are straight, and show some blemishes. A close of the doors results in the Mercedes-Benz thud, and quality of build is still there with consistent gaps, and soundness. A matching removable hardtop is on this car, and with the flick of a few screw mounts using a special tool provided, the top can be removed for that wind in your hair experience. The soft top could not be put up because of a locking mechanism malfunction with the metal soft top covering. Authentic MB vented steel wheels are all around. Headlights show clear, and functioning. The underside views of the car show no visible rusting other than on the surface of the catalytic converter. Normal wear underside is present with nothing visually remarkable. Interior Blue leather buckets with iconic MB headrests sit comfortably in a sea of blue carpet that is somewhat faded. The leather shows slight wear in the drivers seat. Dash, and steering wheel are all in original condition, and an aftermarket stereo is seen with speakers mounted into the rear of the car. Power windows power steering, cruise control, power locks, and power brakes are present. All but 150,000 miles have been logged, and are believed to be original mileage. Drivetrain A fairly clean and un-corroded engine compartment reveals a stout 4.5 Liter V8. Mercedes had to go with their low compression engine to meet ever more stringent US Emissions regulations. This engine is backed by a 3-speed automatic transmission. DIsc brakes are noted all around with fronts being ventilated, and rears standard A project car with a solid base for a restoration as these cars retain their value if restored. Or a daily driver that can cruise all day and not break a sweat. Despite some aforementioned issues, the car is solid, and cabin be driven right off the lot and into your driveway.
1974 Mercedes-Benz 450SL Roadster Sport Leicht or Lightweight Sport refers to a car capable of driving at high speed for long periods of time. 1974 was the era of Mercedes-Benz over engineering the vehicles they built, and this car is no exception. Years of barn storage have rendered this car with lots of corrosion, underneath a fair finish of repaint that was performed several years ago sum up this consignment. The good news is a potential buyer is starting with a car that if restored will always increase in value, because of the period it was built. Exterior Cracked and crazed red gloss repaint covers the exterior. A mohair convertible is in good condition and is manually operated. The top is black, which adds to the overall look with the red, as well as black interior. Chrome is fair, and some corrosion is seen on brightwork, and bumpers. Due to 1974 crash test requirements in the US, the bumpers are a full 8 longer in front and back. Headlights are sealed beam round vs the square European version which were illegal in the US in 1974. Doors are still closing with a melodious deep thud, as with any heavy, well-engineered car. Interior Black leather bucket seats are worn with age and show some cracking but not totally through. Rear bench seat is tight but in good shape. A center console houses the automatic shifter, electric window toggles as well as a storage area. The dash console has an aftermarket stereo and climate controls. The drivers seat is missing the chrome trim which hides the seat hinge, as well as lumbar adjustment knob. Necessary analog gauges are on the dash in front of the driver, and the original steering wheel is present. Drivetrain An 8-cylinder 276ci V8 with electronic fuel injection rests under the hood. The engine shows extensive corrosion as well as spots of rust but runs smoothly. A 3-speed automatic transmission is present as is an air conditioning compressor. Underside also shows extensive corrosion and surface rust, as well as some rubber seal breakdown. Drum brakes all around as well as a below engine mounted catalytic converter and exhaust system in good condition. This is a great example of a desirable sporting classic, a really well-built and entertaining drop-top that puts a smile on your face every time you drive it. Even after 44 years it has a quality German car feel, drives exceptionally well and seems pleasantly solid. Despite visual corrosion, and paint faults, a solid driver priced to move.
1974 Mercedes Benz 450SL Back in this early 70s era Mercedes-Benz was known for over engineering their cars and constructing them like Panzer tanks. Utilizing the best technology of the time, and being innovative in their designs, these cars are now on the verge of being collectibles. They certainly are classics, and obviously do not have the glitz and glamour of todays Mercedes-Benz models, but no matter what, they retain the quintessential Mercedes-Benz THUD when you close the door, regardless of age. At all but 147,000 miles this car is in need of some TLC. Exterior Originally blue on blue now white on blue, a several year ago respray shows signs of patina, and some dents and markings. Badging is all there, and bumpers and britework are in good condition. It is unknown what condition the convertible top is in due to an inability to remove the hard top. This car does have heat insulating glass and a rear window defogger for the hardtop. Interior Blue MB Tex seats in fair condition flank a center console with some wood accent around the gear shift lever. As it ascends to the dash, various controls and trim present in well used condition. Some trim has been pulled off its mounting to insert what appears to be a hands-free microphone for a cell phone. Carpeting is all there and shows wear but is clean. A white headliner is covering the underside of the hardtop and shows in good condition. Power windows, air conditioning, an automatic antenna and a central power locking system are installed options on this car. Drivetrain A 275.8ci V8 and an automatic transmission are installed, however at the time of photographing and inspecting we could not get this car to run. Undercarriage Some major repairs have been done to the underbody to remediate rust. The remediation method was not the neatest of jobs. Some corrosive rust does still exist. Technically a project car, with some of the problems that exist. Attention will have to be paid to many details, however the car definitely could be brought back to life. Many unknowns are within the history of this car, so it may be wise to have a knowledgeable person tag along for a close look.

1974 Mercedes Benz 450SL Convertible - The car is an extremely clean car. Ive been the third owner and like the previous owners, have always kept the car garaged, except when its driven in the warmer months. Its never seen snow and has rarely seen rain. Essentially rust-free. Ive driven it maybe 500 miles every summer, but I havent really driven it for the past four years, except to start it up in Spring and Fall, and run it around for a few miles to make certain everythings okay. Since we bought it in 2007, we had a near-restoration quality exterior renovation, including new paint. In a word, its gorgeous! I also added like-new black leather seats -including the rare drivers side armrest -and have protected them with Benz black sheepskin covers. The engine has been diligently well-maintained for decades. New battery, new fuel delivery system, new brake lines, new brakes, good tires, new shocks, new front end parts and shiny chrome wire wheels. The engine runs great, but it has a small transmission fluid leak that Ive not bothered to fix. The heater isnt connected (blew a hose a couple years ago), but since Ive only driven it in good weather, Ive not bothered to tackle the fix. I dont drive it in the winter, so who needs it?) Same with the cruise control. Othwise, everything is more than good to go. Last year, I replaced the stock radio with a newer AM/FM/CD unit thats iPod compatible, and put in new speakers at the same time. Also put in a new pad under the hood. It comes with a very good soft top -no rips, no tears, no leaks -and a matching hard top with rear window defroster.(This has a little rust on it from sitting in the garage for 10 years. It also comes with a custom-made CarJacket Ive used for winter storage. This is basically a great big bag that zips and seals around the car, enclosing it completely, and protecting it from rust, corrosion, moisture, dust, dirt, and insects.
