1971 Mercedes Benz 280SL Roadster The look chosen by designers Freidrich Geiger, Paul Bracq and Bela Barenyi was similar to the clean, rela tively unadorned lines of the German carmakers sedans. The upright Bosch headlamps and the diminutive horizontal taillights were a common look of the four-door cars. The most distinguishing feature of this second SL generation, also known as the W113, was its concave roof held up by thin pil-lars. The roof soon earned it the fitting Pagoda moniker. Offered for consignment this Pagoda from 1971 is certainly not perfect, however extensive work has been put into this car over its lifetime, and it has been documented with what is believed to be accurate. Consigner states he is the 4th owner of the car, and it has been in his possession since 2004. Exterior Dark Green put on during a strip and respray from 1978 shows some age in the form of crazing, chipping, cracking, and dulling. A few dents are noted but body panels and brite work are straight and in good condition. Noted are areas of filler used on the body panels particularly at the drivers rear of the vehicle where rust is noted. Hardtop is in fair condition with some dents and noted paint flaws not unlike the body panels. Consigner states that the convertible top needs to be replaced, but the frame is in good condition. Interior Cognac leather covers the 2 buckets in the cockpit. These show a plethora of cracking, soft spots and wear. Matching carpeting throughput is in fair condition. The dash appears in nice condition; however, the odometer does not work (since 2/16...consigner states approximately 2K miles have been clocked since it stopped working). Instrument lighting is not operational, as is the AC which the fan works, but it does not hold coolant. Drivetrain As with the badging, the 2.8 Liter engine has a newer transmission (swapped at 96,000) miles and it is an automatic. Undercarriage Mostly clean and rust free, there is a potential problem area where the floor pan meets the toe board on the passenger side. Otherwise undercarriage is unremarkable. A sought-after design and year, this W113 Pagoda is proving to be a very desirable up and comer in the Mercedes-Benz collector world. Certainly not perfect, but it possesses the basic underpinnings for a great restoration, but in the meantime its a wonderful driver.
1971 MERCEDES 280SL ROADSTER for sale. Motorcar Classics is proud to present this most impressive 1971 Mercedes 280SL Roadster featured in #291 Dark Olive Green with and Cognac MB Tex interior. The car has a matching Dark Olive hardtop and Dark Brown soft top. It retains the original Becker AM-FM radio and Mercedes-Benz air conditioning by Frigiking. This 280SL is a late 1971 model which was the last year of Pagoda production before the R107 series was introduced. The 1971 is particularly sought-after by collectors. Our car has Mercedes 4-speed automatic gearbox, which is particularly well-suited to the grand touring nature of the car. A most significant asset of this car is a complete and documented history file from new. The car was delivered locally by Lakeview Motors of Rockville Center, NY, authorized dealer at that time, in March of 1971. The history file includes the original purchase order, the invoice from Mercedes Benz, and all of the paperwork delivered with the car new including the warranty book, Mercedes Frigiking manual, Becker manual, and many more. The car has been cherished by its second owner for about 40 years and the history file contains detailed receipts and photographs of the best care and two major restoration projects. In 2001-02 a total bare metal cosmetic restoration was undertaken. And recently the car received a $26K mechanical overhaul. The second most significant thing about this car is that it is arguably the best sorted and best driving 280SL that we have had the pleasure to offer. It is truly a delight to drive. As an investment car, the value of the provenance is priceless. This is the kind of car you want to own and it is ready to to take pride of place in your garage.
Those with a limited budget should consider purchasing a project vehicle as an option to entering into classic car ownership.

This fantastic matching numbers 1971 280 SL has been owned by my father for the last 36 years. His goal when purchasing the car in 1981 was to make it a 100 point show car. The frame-off restoration was completed in 1983 and included a blueprinted engine rebuild and factory rebuilt transmission at 91k miles. The car was repainted 10 years ago (DB50 with clear coat) and a new soft top was installed 5 years ago. The car won several MBCA car shows and was invited to the 100th anniversary of Mercedes Benz at Pebble Beach in 1986 (Placed 3rd in class). This car drives perfectly, never sat still since the restoration and has never been hit or abused. All trophies, medallions, spare parts and service records are included in the sale. This car is priced below market for a quick sale. Feel free to contact me directly to arrange for an inspection. 630.460.0505
