Plymouth got a two-for-one out of their Road Runner/GTX twins, but they played distinctly different roles. The Road Runner was all about bargain performance, while the GTX was its more sophisticated brother designed to combat the likes of Buick and Mercury. With that in mind, this stunning, high-quality, matching-numbers 1968 Plymouth GTX combines brute horsepower with some luxury features that make a fantastic way to travel. With a restoration thats a few years old, the subtle GTX still has a lot presence. Finished in Sunfire Yellow, which was a popular color in 1968, its a subtle, attractive finish that works on the upscale GTX more than on the high-impact Road Runner or other in-your-face muscle cars. The shape was all-new in 68, but the traditional styling cues are still there, from the sleek hardtop profile to the crease in the quarter panel. The sheetmetal is quite straight and clean, suggesting a solid car was the starting point and we can find few demerits in the show-quality finish. The performance vibe shines through, dont worry, with proper black rocker stripes and GTX emblems on the grille as well as just behind the doors, and the 440 callouts on the hood are not merely for show. Theres also plenty of chrome thats all in fantastic condition, and I have no idea where they found the beautifully preserved GTX-exclusive tail panel, which is virtually unobtainable today. The black vinyl roof gives it a formal look, and it, too, is in excellent shape. This car is still crisp and sharp enough to be welcome on virtually any show field. The rather rare gold bucket seat interior offers a cool change from the usual black or white and the upscale look works quite well in the GTX. Not just a muscle car, the handsome interior is very much in tune with what the GTX was trying to achieve and a big step up from the more basic look of its corporate siblings. The upscale GTX vibe continues with woodgraining on the dash, a lot of bright trim, including on the center console, and a fairly complete set of gauges (including an optional tach) with clear markings. The factory Music Master AM radio remains in place, and even the front/rear fader works. Theres also ice cold factory A/C to make cruising comfortable even on the hottest days. The door panels with their woodgrain inserts look new, as do the carpets, with everything else showing proper care and not a lot of use. The sizable trunk includes a correct mat, jack assembly, and a full-sized spare tire. Mopar fans will probably take a quick glance at the VIN and be pleased to learn that this is a real-deal L-code car with its matching-numbers 440 Super Commando engine. Fully rebuilt at the time of restoration, it runs superbly. Upgrades include a QuickFuel 4-barrel carburetor and an aftermarket coil and distributor, but the original parts come with the car and you cant spot any of it at a glance. The engine bay is nicely detailed and shows few signs of use and lots of accurate details including factory assembly markings. Its backed by a 727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission and the factory-issue 8.75-inch rear end out back. A recent dual exhaust system sounds downright wicked, and while youre looking around under there, note that the floors are in exemplary condition and have been painted to match the bodywork. Factory Magnum 500 wheels look awesome and carry modern redline radials that really make the car pop. The GTX remains a favorite among Mopar faithful, and with the fantastic looks, big block power, and tons of documentation including the original Chrysler Corporation Broadcast Sheet, this is a car you can show and drive with pride. Thats right, kids, its big, bad, blown, and pink. Of course, with 800 horsepower on tap, nobodys going to make fun of this spectacular 1968 Plymouth GTX convertible. Beautifully built and ready to rock, this is a car that works on the track but really lives on the street. You have to be on a mission to build a car like this and paint it Panther Pink. You also have to know that doing so will attract A LOT of attention, so they went the extra mile to give all those onlookers something interesting to look at. And this is no race car where cosmetics came second. No, panel fit is excellent, especially for a high-horsepower convertible, and that paint looks like it cost a lot of money. The hood is blacked out, but its gloss black, so its easier to maintain and gives the car a slightly different look (as if it needed help in that department). The sheetmetal hasnt been radically modified, and they even managed to stuff those giant rear tires under the stock quarters, so there was no surgery required there. The doors open and close easily, the hood clears the blower, and all the correct GTX emblems were reinstalled once the paint was dry. Even the bumpers got a nice, shiny layer of chrome to reinforce the street car image. The interior is full of race gear, but its far from minimalist. The original bench seat was dumped in favor of a pair of body-hugging race buckets, which were embroidered with GTX logos in matching pink, which is a nice detail that suggests the builder went the extra mile. The back seat is gone, of course, but the area is fully upholstered and the panels surrounding the roll cage are neatly fitted and give it a very well-finished appearance. Auxiliary instruments under the dash include a tach and shift light, and the TCI shifter controls a reverse valve body, so practice your shifts before you go out hunting. The original AM/FM radio is still in the dash, albeit disconnected, since youre really not going to be able to use it with the thundering big block rumbling away anyhow. Even the trunk is neatly upholstered in black carpet, including the fuel cell and battery box. The engine is a stroked and poked 440, which now displaces 500 cubes, and runs happily on 93 octane pump gas. Twin 650 Holleys feed the 6-71 blower, which looks awesome sitting atop the color-matched engine. In fact, all the hardware is painted to match the bodywork, suggesting that this car might be as effective on the show field as the drag strip. Painted inner fenders, plenty of chrome, and a big aluminum radiator delight the eye when you pop the hood, and the undercarriage looks every bit as impressive. The transmission is a reworked TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic with a 3100 RPM stall torque converter. Out back, a narrowed Ford 9-inch rear was stuffed full of Strange axles and a set of 5.18 Auburn gears, and theres a disc brake at all four corners. Long-tube headers and a full custom 3-inch exhaust system with side exits makes for a truly epic soundtrack that removes all doubt about this cars potency. Skinny front tires and mammoth Mickey Thompson meats try to hook it all up. With just 500 miles on the build, this car is still very fresh. A long labor-of-love build, commissioned by a late friend of the company, and built by Kermit Harper, another late-great friend, this car has a special place in our hearts. With a history that has been traced back to its original owner it was ordered at the start of the 1968 model year, the original sales documents show the car was delivered on December 29, 1967, from Ernie Brown & Son Motors on York Road in Hatboro, Pennsylvania, where the entire purchase price was $3,762.37. When ordered all the right boxes were checked, TorqueFlite automatic transmission, Sure-Grip rear axle, power steering and brakes with discs up front, AM radio, in-dash tachometer, special padded center seat and tinted glass all around. The original owner moved to California in the early 1970s, bringing this triple green GTX with him, and then kept this car for over 15 years before it was sold to the second owner in 1983. It remained in California and Arizona until 2011 when it was acquired by an owner in Texas before coming to its current owner in Minnesota a few years ago. In 1990, the second owner of the car applied a new coat of paint in the original Avocado Green and did some other cosmetic freshening of the car as well as mechanical and suspension work as needed to keep this unique Plymouth roadworthy while paying strict attention to authenticity. In 1994, noted Mopar expert Galen Govier was hired to decode the vehicle and provided a complete report confirming the original numbers matching drive train had the same major components that it had been born with. The Plymouth GTX was introduced as the Belvedere GTX in 1967 by the Plymouth division. It was positioned as a mid-sized upscale-trimmed performance muscle car through the 1971 model year. The GTX was positioned as a gentlemans muscle car. Standard was Plymouths 440 cu in (7.2 L) V8 engine called the Super Commando 440 rated at 375 Horsepower. Optional was Chryslers 426 cu in (7.0 L) Hemi with 425 Horsepower. A heavy duty suspension system was also standard. Chrysler introduced major changes in the design of the 1968 model Plymouth B-bodies and the GTX was given a completely new look. A new hourglass body replaced the previous rectilinear design. The high performance 440 was standard in the GTX. The TorqueFlite automatic transmission was standard on the GTX as well. The GTX used the Sport Satellite trim and was offered in two body styles, a two-door convertible and a two-door hardtop (no B-pillar). All featured dual horizontal racing stripes on the lower sides ending with a GTX emblem ahead of the rear wheel openings. Base price was $3,329, with a convertible available from $3,590. A total of 17,914 hardtops, but only 1,026 convertibles were sold. The 425 bhp, 426 Street Hemi was optional, though it was only fitted to 410 hardtops and about 36 convertibles. This particular example is a TWO OWNER car and has less than 90K original miles. It underwent a professional, no expense spared restoration in 2005. Finished in its correct SS1 Yellow color, this HEMI is super rare and has held up extremely well. Complete with restoration pictures and a DVD with 100s of additional pictures. The date correct HP 440 is an all new rebuild that is .30 over and has very little miles on it. Correct 18 spline hemi four speed. Original dana 60. Extremely nice top to bottom. Every part on this car that you would want new is new, and all things you would like original are, and have been restored. Every brake component and wheels are brand new. All suspension and steering components are new. All the gauges work. The 3.54 gears in the dana are still highway friendly yet the car likes to shred tires when you dip into the 850 double pumper atop the vintage tm7 tarantula intake.
