Some of our favorite creations are the cars that the factory could have built but didnt. This 1968 Dodge Dart is such a machine, a street version of the Hemi drag cars Chrysler built to dominate the strip. With 472 cubic inches, B5 Blue paint, and a power-to-weight ratio of, say, a cruise missile, its one mans ultimate Mopar. Dodges flyweight Dart proved the old adage that taking weight out was just as effective as putting horsepower in. But what if you did both, then painted it Mopars favorite color, B5 Blue? Well, youd have this incredible Dart. Built from a rust-free V8 car, it was treated to the best of everything, professionally engineered, and fully sorted on the mean streets. The little Dart is one of Chryslers best styling efforts, clearly Mopar but not ashamed to be mid-sized. A few modifications get it closer to its race car roots, including fiberglass front fenders and rear fenders that were subtly re-sized to handle the giant meats underneath. The brilliant show-quality paint means that keeping it on the DL is going to be a challenge, and with that gaping garage door of a hood scoop, you need to be careful that the Hemi doesnt inhale any small birds. All the chrome was refinished to show standards, the stainless was polished, and theres just no such thing as a race car that ever looked this good. The interior is anything but race car basic, wearing fresh upholstery by Legendary, which includes a pair of simply gorgeous bucket seats. The Darts original dash was retained and all the gauges rebuilt, but theyre augmented with a high-mounted tach and oil pressure gauge that look suitably vintage, and theyre both a good idea with almost 700 horsepower on tap. There is no radio and Im disappointed that youd even ask, because the sound of the Hemi should be more than adequate. A Hurst 4-speed shifter with reverse lock-out has been mounted between the seats and works even better than the old pistol-grip setup you might have admired when this car was new. The back seat is gone and theres a cage that makes it moot anyway, but it has been beautifully upholstered back there suggesting that this was a very expensive build. Even the side windows are Lexan, just to keep it authentic. The trunk is correctly detailed with a reproduction and carries the battery, because theres just no room left under the hood. The reason for that is the 472 cubic inch crate Hemi thats rated at a mind-boggling 680 horsepower. With a Mopar Performance cross-ram intake, dual 850 Holleys, and a lot of chrome, its both scary fast and beautiful to look at. Inside theres an Eagle crank, Scat H-beam rods, Ross 10.75:1 pistons, and a Comp Cams solid lifter camshaft. The inner fenders and firewall have been smoothed and painted, and theres a correct Hemi K-member to hold it in place. And while theres no power steering or brakes, the car remains quite street-friendly. The transmission is an A833 18-spline 4-speed fed by a Centerforce clutch and spinning a Dana 60 with 4.10 gears on a limited slip. Front discs and rear drums make up the braking system, and the custom exhaust system is a work of art all by itself. The floors are finished as beautifully as the bodywork and the tub is reinforced with a set of weld-in subframe connectors. It even captures the vintage race vibe with Cragar mags and 6.70-15 skinnies up front and 10.5x29.5-15 slicks in back. With build documents and only test and tune miles, this is one brutal performance car that you can buy with confidence and enjoy with impunity. Call today!

Gateway Classic Cars now has a very special and beautiful 1968 Dodge Dart GTS Convertible available in Houston! This one is powered by a numbers matching 340 CID V8 engine that goes through a factory TorqueFlite transmission. This engine has only covered less than 500 miles since the car was restored in 2013. Exterior is finished in a red with black top combination. Features include an AM radio, automatic convertible top, hub caps, power brakes, power steering, jack, seat belts, vinyl interior and radial tires. This is part of the fourth generation of Dodge Dart vehicles produced between 1967 and 1976. The Dart was substantially redesigned for the 1967 model year. It received new styling, revised steering systems, wider front track and frame rail spacing. Redesigned K-members were added to accept the larger engines that Dodge had in mind for the car. In 1967 you would also notice the rear window with inverse curves, creating a new and unique appearance at the rear of a greenhouse, but designed to collect snow! The 170 CID I6 was dubbed simply Dart , with the 270 and GT carrying on mostly unchanged. In late 1967 the GTS came out in limited quantities due to it s lateness, but the 1968 was arguably improved anyway, by fitting the new high-output 340 CID V8! That is the car that you are looking at here. The first of the 340 GTS cars. Aside from the engine, changes for 1968 were relatively subtle. The park and turn lights in the grille were moved slightly inboard and made round. Side marker lights were added to the front fenders and rear quarter panels, to comply with newly introduced Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108. Shoulder harnesses (separate, this year and until 1973, from the lap belts) and non-glare matte finish on the windshield wiper arms were also part of the 1968 federally mandated safety package. This is a hard to find vehicle and a perfect addition to the garage. For sale at Gateway Classic Cars in our St. Louis showroom is a 1968 dodge Dart. This bad to the bone Dart is both show and go! The meticulous restoration was a no expense spared job that included a lot of high performance goodies. Power comes from a built 451 based from a 400 block that features aluminum main caps, Veolia Pistons, Bill Mille aluminum rods, 3.375 billet crank and roller cam and lifters. The cylinder heads are aluminum Indy 440 1 cylinder heads as well as an Indy aluminum intake manifold and a CNC ported valley pan. Its equipped with a Milidon oiling system, Milidon oil pan, custom push rods, K Motion valve springs, Stainless steel valves with lockers and retainers, Mopar performance aluminum water pump and a Holley 1050 Dominator carburetor. Exhaust and the menacing sounds that emit from this power house come out of custom headers, exhaust and Borla mufflers. This power needs something just as stout to transfer the power back to the rear wheels. Accomplishing that is a TCI Power Glide transmission, TCI torque converter, Jerry Bickel Chromoly drive shaft with billet trans and rear end yokes, Strange 9 inch with 40 spline spool, 4.56:1 gears and Strange 40 spline axles. Putting the power to ground is no easy task. Accomplishing this feat are Strange double adjustable rear shocks, Chassis Works ladder bar, Strange struts, Strange Rack and Pinion steering and 19.5 Mickey Thompsons wrapped around Weld Racing Aluma Star wheels. Up front are 26x5 Good Years also wrapped around Weld Racing Aluma Stars. Slowing things down is drama free thanks to a set of Strange four wheel disc brakes, Strange master cylinder and steel braided brake lines. Safety is one thing that shouldnt be taken for granted and certainly not missed. This one is ready to hold you in place and keep you safe. Doing so is a custom 12 point roll cage and Stroud 5 point racing belts. Other notable build details include a Hurst roll control line lock, Hurst Quarter Stick shifter, Griffin radiator, Barry Grant fuel system (400 pump & 4 port regulator), Painless wiring harness, Jazz 15 gallon fuel cell and of course beautiful workmanship that shows through and through. 1968 Dodge Dart Super Stock For SaleBy now, Every speed enthusiast in America has heard about the new 2018 Dodge Dart Hemi. With race times of 0 to 60 in 2.1 seconds and a quarter mile in under 10 seconds, this is the new fastest car on the road. What people may not know is that the history of this new Dart goes back to the late 60s. On February 20th, 1968, Chryslers corporate headquarter sent a Press release to Dodge dealerships across the country of its intent to build and sell drag ready, Hemi powered Darts. The press release stated that Dodge wanted to build a factory built race-ready drag racer out of the 68 Dart GTS hardtop for competition in Class B Super Stock drag racing. As a limited option only available in 1968, the L023 became the Hurst-reworked Hemi Dart using the 426 Hemi engine. These special models of which only 80 were made, were created strictly for drag racing, and included a non-warranty disclaimer. Dodge blew everyones mind when they decided to squeeze a 426 Hemi engine into the breadbox sized engine bay of a Dodge Dart, creating a factory-built racer that could scream into the high 9s to low 10s right out of the showroom, same as todays Dart... Top speed was reported at 130mph. While these cars were not intended for street use, and came with a disclaimer stating such, Chrysler did set them up to meet street legal requirements. This undoubtedly led to some very cool late night drives. From that day on, a true legend was born. This machine came straight from the factory built on Dodges smallest car in their fleet, the Dart; and Chryslers most powerful power plant, the 426ci Hemi. The 1968 Dart Super Stock 426 Hemi was considered the fastest factory-built high performance machine on the planet in its day. Today, an original 1968 Dart Super Stock 426 Hemi can hit and exceed the $200,000 - $250,000 mark IF you can find one of the original 80 made. Today, we are proud to offer this very special exact reproduction with a special story of its own! This Dart started its life as a basic Dodge Dart. A very well kept rust free car with all the right stuff. It was purchased by its second owner and builder of the car from scratch. It began with a true 1968-69 426 street Hemi engine that was sitting for decades on a shelf at a local Fire Department on Long Island in NY. The factory built street Hemi engine (block # 2468330) originally came from a 1969 Dodge Charger. The engine had less than 1200 miles when purchased back in the late 1990s. By 2000, it was sent to the legendary engine builder Jack Merkel in Hauppauge NY to be upgraded to the exact specs of the 1968 Dart Super Stock 426 Race Hemi engine. Upgrades include 12-1 pistons, blue printed heads, correct Cross Ram manifolds with correct 4235 & 4236 Holly 750 carbs. All linkage is correct as is a body Hemi oil pan and system. Correct Hooker Headers, unsilenced air cleaners, trunk mount Super Stock battery, A-833 Slick Shift 4-speed transmission with correct Hurst Shifter and Hurst reverse lock out. A brand new DANA 60 Heavy Duty Sure Grip rear end with 4.88 gear ratio, all as delivered meaning exactly how it left the factory!! A fully restored front end was also added. The body was completed by the second owner himself. it is built to the exact specs of the original Dart Super Stock 426 Hemi as delivered. The original body was rotisserie-restored, and fully primed as delivered. No undercoating or body sealant was added as original. The raw fiberglass front clip with Hemi lift-off hood, Plexi type side glass with pull strap glass and fixed quarter glass, all as delivered. Hurst factory type rear wheel well cutouts are as delivered. It has the correct black rims & street tires, special off set master cylinder and hoses and the correct detailing and stickers from the factory. This Dart is literally built as close to original Hurst specs as possible. It is a TOP show winner and has never been raced! This car is so precise that even the interior is fully restored to specs including the exact A-100 light weight bucket seats with aluminum mounting brackets. Chrysler initially used these seats in the A-100 Dodge Van. They found them to be extremely light weight and began using them in the Super Stock Dart. Racing seat belts and all correct delete plates were used as original. This amazing piece of Stock Car history is virtually brand new and as a reproduction, is available at a fraction of the cost of one of the original 80. This is a street legal Dodge Dart Super Stock 426 Hemi. The original 1969 426 Hemi engine was professionally upgraded by Legendary engine builder Jack Merkel to the Race Hemi in this Dart. The body, frame and interior were also professionally built to perfection. 1968 Dodge Dart GTS Convertible For Sale - Restored, Fully Documented, Rare LMC is very proud to offer for sale this 1968 Dodge Dart GTS Convertible The Dodge Dart was one of the most successful compact cars to ever come out of Detroit as it offered a level of performance and styling that was unmatched in its segment. New for 1968, the Dart GTS was offered with a 340 CI small-block rated at 275 HP and a 383/330 HP big-block. The larger engine’s extra weight, combined with the 340’s rumored actual output of 300 HP, negated the 383’s power advantage, making the GTS 340 a well-balanced threat to Chevrolet’s Nova SS. Technical goodies included a Carter AVS 4-barrel carburetor, low-restriction dual exhaust system with chromed tips, Rallye performance suspension and 5.5-inch wheels with E70-14 Red Streak tires. Twin hood bulges and a tell-tale contrasting bumblebee stripe mark this 1968 Dart convertible as a GTS 340. This particular Dart GTS Convertible was built on March 25th, 1968 at the Hamtramck Plant. Factory painted in the highly desirable “S” code yellow back completed by a black power convertible top and black interior. It was factory ordered with the optional 340 engine backed by the TorqueFlite automatic transmission. As easily noted from its overall condition, this gorgeous vehicle has been beautifully restored and it is fully detailed throughout. Outside, the exterior is covered in its factory “S” code Yellow base/clear paint and uses the black bumblebee tail stripe to accent the black convertible boot and upscale black interior. The interior includes both bucket seats and a center console, the wood steering wheel, chrome pedal dress-ups, tinted glass and a remote driver’s-side mirror. The exhaust still ends in the chrome tips standard on the GT Sport package. This car also has power steering and manual drum brakes, as well as the A-body big-block Rallye suspension. This fast, comfortable, and stylish Dart is an outstanding example of a rare muscle car that was built to be driven and enjoyed on nice summer days. One of only 271 ever to leave the factory; complete with a numbers matching engine and has benefitted from a very nice restoration. Included with this beautiful Dart GTS are the Galen Govier documents, Broadcast Sheet, Owner’s Manual, plus more. This Dart GTS would be the perfect addition to any Mopar enthusiasts collection.
