Chevrolet celebrates 100 years of building pickup trucks as former chief engineer who helped Chevy trucks reaching this popularity celebrates turning 101.
Take a good, close look at this 1966 Chevrolet Corvette, because while you think youve seen one like it before, were going to politely disagree. Professionally built in 1996 by the experts at Corvette Country in Georgia, its a state-of-the-art (1990s style) resto-mod that uses a trick 1996 C4 Grand Sport body swap, and did it before it was popular and easy. The 1996 Corvette Grand Sport was the pinnacle of C4 Corvette performance. Its a great foundation from which to build a take-no-prisoners Corvette, so the guys at Corvette Country sourced one with very few miles and started the transformation by peeling off the body and interior. On top went a clean 1966 Corvette coupe shell, one of the most iconic looks of all time. Yes, its been tweaked and modified, stating with a two-inch stretch to get it to look right on the C4 chassis. Then they added some fender flares to not only give it a vintage Grand Sport look, but to also clear the large-by-huge 17-inch rubber. A custom hood was created, theres a chin spoiler to replace the original bumpers, and out back, the deck was massaged to incorporate some functional air vents and even an opening deck lid for access to the fuel cell. It was all covered in beautiful purple paint with a white stripe, and if you want attention, well, this Corvette generates it by the bucketful. Look carefully at the photos, because there are far more details there than we can describe. They didnt throw away the Grand Sports interior; no, they kept it and stuffed it into the 1966 shell and the workmanship is extremely impressive. Factory bucket seats are as comfortable here as they were in the original C4, the center console houses the power seat controls as well as the 6-speed shifter, and the full instrument panel, including gauges, HVAC, stereo system, and other hardware, was bolted into place. Even the C4 door panels were resized to fit on the C2 doors. Turn the key and the digital speedometer lights up like it should and the A/C blows ice cold (its OEM hardware, after all). Some wood appliques give the interior an upscale look along with the matching wood-rimmed wheel, and youll probably be surprised to learn that it all works like it should. Very impressive! The Grand Sports LT4 engine really needs no introduction: 350 cubic inches, 330 horsepower, 340 pounds of torque, ready to rock. Its bulletproof, and thanks to factory fuel injection, runs beautifully. Crank the key and it starts instantly and idles well even when cold, just like a modern Corvette should. No modifications (do you need them?) mean that its virtually bulletproof and the looks youll get when you open the hood are worth the price of admission all by themselves. Look closely and youll see that the traction control and ABS systems are likewise fully functional, and the C4s ZF 6-speed manual gearbox still shifts as sweetly as it did 20 years ago. The suspension, brakes, and even the catalytic converters (feeding side pipes!) are all OEM, making this car reliable and easy to service, not to mention predatory fast. Factory Grand sport A-Mold wheels were dipped in chrome then wrapped with oversized rubber: 275/40/17 front and giant 335/35/17 rear Bridgestone radials. Beautifully built and expertly engineered, this car is a study in how they did it before kits and body swaps were common. An OEM experience with gorgeous good looks to match. Call today!
This car is the perfect marriage of old and new. Like that old wedding rhyme, something old, something new, borrowed, and blue. Something old represents continuity, in this case the Corvette legacy. Something new, the future, or in this case, current technology. Something borrowed brings good luck, and something blue represented love or purity. Borrow something, maybe a set of driving gloves, and head on down the aisle, um road, with this car. You will love it! It is the perfect marriage of old and new. Lets start with a few notes on that Corvette legacy. This car has a history traced back to the original purchase by a New York TV script writer from Rory Chevrolet in NY. Then in 1992, this car received a complete frame off restoration. The attention to detail and originality earned it high praise as well as awards from the National Corvette Restorers Society. The body of this Stingray coupe had received the expert attention of professionals who insured that all the big things as well as all the little things were right before recoating it in the original 986AA Silver Pearl paint. The factory side pipes are always an attention getter and a rare treat on any car. Like the body, they are meticulously restored and then installed properly adding to the first class look and presentation of the car. Finned aluminum knock-off wheels and gold wall tires are the icing on the cake and the whole package places this car in the cream of the crop of vintage Corvettes. Open the door and you will find a very neat and clean Black interior that breaks from originality in a couple areas, but does so with attention to detail and quality of workmanship that everyone should be able to appreciate. The door panels set the tone with thin chrome piping surrounding an upper panel containing the door lock, latch, and pull handle as well as the window crank, while a line of chrome highlights the armrest. A beefy, leather wrapped steering wheel is mounted on a chrome three-spoke hub with crossed racing flag center button. Behind it is a dash that has had updated gauges installed in the factory locations for a nice look and modern accuracy for monitoring critical engine functions as well as speed and RPM. The center console continues the stock look along with modern tech with a Retrosound radio and factory style A/C controls for the updated R134 air conditioning system. The seats are reupholstered beautifully and the shifter for a 4-speed automatic transmission hints at the upgrades to the drivetrain. Open the hood and you will find a 6.2-liter LS3 V8 motor nestled down in a neat and clean engine bay. It looks so right in there with a cold air intake feeding the factory LS3 intake that even aftermarket engine tuners admit is hard to improve upon. The installation is all first class with attention to detail that makes it look like the factory did it, and the results are that everything works right and the performance is awesome. The power it makes flows back through a 4L60 transmission which works perfectly together with the power of the new engine. The rear end remains stock but was rebuilt and refreshed with new bushings during the frame off restoration which are still like new. As part of the LS3 conversion, the front end was upgraded to rack and pinion steering which is a wonderful thing for improved handling and precision steering feel on this car. The perfect marriage of something old and something new. Come on down and check out this awesome Corvette. You may want to borrow a set of driving gloves and wear some blue socks when you do.

A big block 427 with tons of 60s muscle car horsepower thats all you really need to know to crave this 1966 Chevrolet Corvette convertible. But if you dig a little deeper you find even more great features like a fresh restoration to one of the rarest colors around, a four-speed manual, and an exceptionally accurate interior. Trophy Blue is an amazing color especially when paired with the distinctive white folding roof. In fact, while the Corvette is an all-American, this color combo has a downright European flair. This is also one of the rarest colors for the 66 Corvette. It was only available that year, which makes this one of less than 1,500 ever built. The paint was refinished as part of a thorough restoration that took place around 795 miles ago. So combined with the exceptional fiberglass, it lines up straight to showcase the creased lines of the C2 body. But more than just great care, it has all the features that make these classics desirable, including the power bubble hood, intricate chrome bumpers shining like mirrors, optional luggage rack, and even the correct wheel covers. While we like the way the light blue looks with the white top, when you take it down, the pairing with the factory-correct dark blue interior is even more attractive. Just as much attention was spent restoring the interior as the exterior, and so there havent even been enough miles to put a wrinkle in the fresh bucket seats. All your favorite icons are in place from the wood grain three-spoke steering wheel, to the dual cowl dash. But what youll really love about this classic is the intoxicating feeling that comes from rowing through the gears, watching the crisp gauges dance, and hearing the roar of the big block. This was a pivotal year for the Corvette, because 1966 was the introduction of the now-famous 427 cubic-inch V8. And this Sting Ray celebrates it perfectly with its original big block still sitting in the engine bay. The largest V8 available that year is dressed properly with Chevy Orange on the block and valve covers. Plus, theres a nice bit of flash with the correct ignition shield and chrome air cleaner with 427 decals. And as you look at the details, this engine bay is so correct and tidy that even the Holley four-barrel carburetor is correct. This big block classic is all about keeping you connected with the road. The four-speed manual transmission allows you to dial in the performance; the fully-independent suspension holds the road better than some modern muscle machines; and the four-wheel disc brakes provide superior stopping power. This is the rare and high quality vintage car that youll love to drive. Its a true Corvette of distinction, and its looking for a true collector. Is that you? Call now!

The Q-Corvette, initiated in 1957, envisioned a smaller, more advanced Corvette as a coupe-only model, boasting a rear transaxle, independent rear suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes, with the rear brakes mounted inboard. Exterior styling was purposeful, with peaked fenders, a long nose, and a short, bobbed tail.Meanwhile, Zora Arkus-Duntov and other GM engineers had become fascinated with mid and rear-engine designs. It was during the Corvairs development that Duntov took the mid/rear-engine layout to its limits in the CERV I concept. The Chevrolet Experimental Research Vehicle was a lightweight, open-wheel single-seat racer. A rear-engined Corvette was briefly considered during 1958 60, progressing as far as a full-scale mock-up designed around the Corvairs entire rear-mounted power package, including its complicated air-cooled flat-six as an alternative to the Corvettes usual water-cooled V-8. By the fall of 1959, elements of the Q-Corvette and the Sting Ray Special racer would be incorporated into experimental project XP-720, which was the design program that led directly to the production 1963 Corvette Sting Ray. The XP-720 sought to deliver improved passenger accommodation, more luggage space, and superior ride and handling over previous Corvettes. While Duntov was developing an innovative new chassis for the 1963 Corvette, designers were adapting and refining the basic look of the racing Sting Ray for the production model. A fully functional space buck (a wooden mock-up created to work out interior dimensions) was completed by early 1960, production coupe styling was locked up for the most part by April, and the interior, instrument panel included was in place by November. Only in the fall of 1960 did the designers turn their creative attention to a new version of the traditional Corvette convertible and, still later, its detachable hardtop. For the first time in the Corvettes history, wind tunnel testing helped refine the final shape, as did practical matters like interior space, windshield curvatures, and tooling limitations. Both body styles were extensively evaluated as production-ready 3/8-scale models at the Caltech wind tunnel.

Gateway Classic Cars of Houston is proud to offer up this stunning 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Resto-Mod for sale. Between the modern power-train and the classic styling, this car is definitely a show stopper. Under the Stinger hood of this beast is a Chevrolet LS3 that would have been found in a more modern C5 Vette. Upon starting the engine, everyone around can hear the deep, throaty sounds of the side pipes. This swap not only provides much more power and drive-ability to the car, but it also makes servicing much easier considering that all of the parts needed for the engine are still mass produced by companies for GM. As for the engine itself, it runs very strong and brings as much power to the car as a big block would have back in the day (hence the big block hood). Sending that modern power to the rear end is a five speed manual transmission that shifts firmly through the gears with an extremely short throw shifter. This car having a modern power-train, of course it has disc brakes all around that provide a good initial bite along with firm stopping power thanks to a Willwood master cylinder. Moving outward, the exterior of the car is finished in a traditional light blue metallic that looks very nice and correct for the era of car. Finishing the stinger hood is a white stripe. Overall the paint is in very good condition and shows well. Supporting each corner of this beauty are chrome alloy wheels wrapped in low profile performance tires with good life left in them likely sourced from a C5. The white soft top is also in very good condition and moves freely as it should. Upon entering the cabin, the driver will be greeted by a light blue interior to match the exterior. Overall, the interior is in very good condition and accents the excellent work performed on the power-train and suspension. The vinyl seats provide plenty of comfort while still maintaining decent support for cornering. In the summer months, the driver will appreciate the convertible soft top that lets in plenty of sunshine and fresh air. The Second-Generation Chevrolet Corvette was sold between 1963-1967 and considered by many as the high watermark for the historic brand. 1966 was a significant year in terms of powerplant offerings for the Corvette. The 427 cubic-inch V8 replaced the venerable 396 as the showcased big-block option. While peak horsepower ratings were about the same, the 427 packed 11% more low-end torque. The frontal appearance was mildly altered with an egg crate grille insert to replace the pervious horizontal bars. In addition, Corvettes received an emblem on the corner of the hood and head rests became an option for the first time. This gorgeous Nassau Blue / Dark Blue 1966 Corvette Coupe is fully restored beauty with numbers matching engine and a new transmission. The owner states 1,000 miles since the 427 cid 390 hp V8 enjoyed a complete rebuild and was mated to a new Tremec 5-speed manual transmission. Additional features include knock-off wheels, leather interior, ice-cold aftermarket AC and Wonderbar audio system.
