1959 PORSCHE 1600D CONVERTIBLE REPLICA BY INTERMECCANICA for sale. Motorcar Classics is proud to present this outstanding 1959 Porsche Convertible D Replica that was custom-built by the respected craftsmen at Intermeccanica of Vancouver, Canada. This car was built in 2004 and has covered only 7,227 miles. The Convertible was Porsches successor to the iconic Speedster and featured roll-up windows and a more substantial convertible top. The Intermeccanica car is a faithful replica that is hard to distinguish from the original card, and is arguably better better than the original in both build quality, handling and performance. This car, in particular, is even more authentic than most with an original, period correct Porsche steering wheel and trim. But the original convertible D would not have had AC, power windows, heated seats, interval wipers, power brakes, sophisticated audio system or many other amenities that were specified from the list of bespoke amenities available from Intermeccanica. And with 146 HP on its 2100 CC engine built by CB Performance in California, this car performs and handles better than any Convertible D we have had the pleasure to drive. It is fully and freshly serviced and capable of daily or cross-country driving. The car comes with a substantial history file including a build sheet that I offer here for your consideration. This is a most impressive automobile that will be appreciated and admired by porsche enthusiasts. Launched by Porsche in 1948, the 356 evolved over almost two decades before production ceased in 1965. Combining the minimalistic aesthetic of the earliest models with greatly improved driveability, the 356 A models are highly prized as gold-standard collectibles. This example, a late T-2 Coupe built on March 31, 1959 the last production year for the 356 A was finished in Meissen Blue with Red leatherette upholstery. According to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and Kardex, chassis 107183 was shipped to Hoffman Motor Car Company of New York. The car s early history is unknown, but in the 2000s, this 356 was restored by a team of Southern California specialists and re-emerged in its original and exquisite livery. The attention to detail in the work is evident, and a ledger on file notes $60,000 worth of expenses. Under the current ownership, a comprehensive cosmetic and mechanical freshening was commissioned in late 2018, including a high-quality repaint by Jeff s Resurrections of Taylor, Texas. Underscoring this coupe s authenticity, the chassis number is stamped on the rear deck lid, the engine number matches the factory records, and the gas tank is appropriately date coded. An owner s manual, a tool kit, and jack accompany the car at auction. A charming representative of one of the most sought-after Porsche models, this 356 A is eligible for countless tours, rallies, concours, and Porsche club events, and would beautifully complement any collection of classic 1950s sports cars.
A one-year-only model, the 1959 Porsche 356 A Convertible D retained many styling cues from the revered Speedster while adding practicality through a taller windscreen, windup windows, a more substantial soft top, and more comfortable seats. One of the rarest 356 variants, Porsche built just 1,331 examples of the Convertible D between August 1958 and September 1959. Mechanically similar to its Speedster predecessor, the Convertible D could achieve 0 60 mph in about 14 seconds and reach a top speed of 100 mph. This 1959 Porsche 356 A Convertible D was completed on June 12, 1959, according to its accompanying Kardex, and delivered new to Hoffman Motors in New York, painted in Silver Metallic and trimmed in red leatherette. The car has since been refinished in period-correct Meissen Blue over a Tan interior. Also perhaps during its long-term ownership by a Porsche 356 Club member a wood steering wheel, Abarth exhaust, and Marchal driving lights were added. Currently fitted with a proper 1600 motor, this Convertible D is accompanied by its matching-numbers Type 616/1 engine (no. 74655), as well as a spare transaxle, tool kit, tonneau cover, and copy of the factory Kardex. A rare and arguably more versatile alternative to the Speedster, this is an attractive and well-presented 356 that offers an excellent opportunity to acquire an example of the increasingly sought-after Convertible D model.
