The 1956 Ford Thunderbird is one of those designs that never goes out of style, and remains an instantly-identifiable icon of the 50s. Beautifully styled, comfortable, and with enough performance to keep almost any gearhead happy, they are perhaps the best combination of styling and performance from the 1950s. This beautiful Fiesta Red example received a quality restoration about 10 years ago and still looks great. Code X Navajo Gray is this cars original color, but during the restoration it was bathed in brilliant Fiesta Red, a high-visibility hue thats particularly handsome on the 56 Thunderbird. Solving some of 1955s problems, the spare tire was moved out to the rear bumper to improve trunk space and simultaneously gave the Bird a long, lean look that is easy to recognize from a distance. Other upgrades include cowl vents to reduce the heat build-up around your feet (those of you with melted sneakers know what Im talking about), and the ever-popular porthole hardtop to improve visibility. Up close, this is a very nice Bird, and even though it has been driven over the past few years, it still presents quite well, which speaks highly of the restoration work. Fit and finish are good and thanks to modern paint materials, the shine is far deeper than the original lacquer might have been. Chrome and brightwork are dazzling, from the eggcrate grille up front to the unique rear bumper with the exhaust ports in the outside corners. We even like the chromed headlight bezels that really dress this particular Bird up nicely. Code XA black and white is the cars original interior combination and it was accurately re-created when the car was restored. The black provides a great contrast and prevents red overload, making for a spectacular look that makes people stop in their tracks when they see it. The engine-turned panel that runs across the door panels and dash is like jewelry, and the seat cover design makes the bench feel like separate buckets. Youll also note that this car includes power windows and a power seat, and doesnt offer any of the many modifications and upgrades that enthusiasts usually install. Heck, even the original Town & Country AM radio is still in the center of the dash! I suppose you could include the manual choke knob under the dash as a modification, but I doubt many enthusiasts will complain about such a beneficial change to the notorious teapot carburetor. It also comes with a matching red porthole hardtop as well as a lovely black canvas folding top, plus a fully-finished trunk. Powering most Thunderbirds in 1956 was Fords Y-block V8 engine, and the P-code version displaces 292 cubic inches and generates impressive horsepower thanks to a 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust. The engine bay was detailed when it was restored and while it shows a few signs of use today, the engine still runs even better than it looks. From the Ford Red paint on the block to the stamped steel valve covers (now chrome plated), it certainly looks the part of Fords personal/luxury car. It starts easily and runs superbly, meaning that you can jump in and go any time in your new Bird. The undercarriage is clean and solid with no surprises, with power steering plus a Ford-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission and a 9-inch rear end with 3.00 gears inside, all of which make it easy to drive for anybody. Flashy wire wheel covers and a set of wide whites are the perfect finish for a 50s icon. These Thunderbirds are wonderful performers on the road, and are just as fun to drive today as they were in 1956. If youve been searching for a quality Bird with no stories, youve just found it. Call today!
This Bird is a rare find. Only 36,748 miles on original engine. I am the 5th owner purchasing the car in 2003. It has been through two restorations the last two years ago. The original carburetor and generator were rebuilt and replaced with new Holley four barrel and alternator for driving reliability. Mechanical updates - electronic coil, distributor, electrical fuel pump, water pump, head gaskets, heater core and radiator, brakes and lines...virtually everything has been replaced. During the first restoration in 2005 new lacquer paint, interior and complete chrome updates were added. Upon purchase of car the original rebuilt carburetor, generator and original wheel coverings that were on the car when delivered in 1956 will be included. Come and test drive to experience a truly American Classic feel
There is something special about a classic car that has been driven fairly routinely over the years. Its like a person staying active as we age. It keeps things moving more freely and is good for our soul. This 56 T-Bird has felt the sunshine and brought joy to its owners throughout its life. It has also seen good routine maintenance along the way and is looking for its next lucky owner. Being the first of the Thunderbirds puts this car in a special place of automotive history. It was never intended to be considered a sportscar , but rather a personal car with a sporting nature and they hit the nail on the head. The Coral Red paint on this car is a mid-life respray of the factory original color and is still in good condition. One feature that is unique to the 56, is the Continental Spare tire treatment at the rear. Of-course there are those stylish tailfins and round taillights as well as rear wheel well spats adding some flair too. You can also drop on the removable hardtop with the classic Opera window if you like either for cool weather motoring or just for fun. The view from the front is classic too with the oval chrome grill flanked by single headlights perched high on the front fenders along with a Thunderbird emblem in the center and a substantial chrome bumper underlining it all. Open the door, or just have a look inside if the white convertible roof is down, and you will find a Fiesta Red and Ivory interior that is also the factory original color for the car and a beautiful compliment to the Coral Red paint. The door panel is pleated in ivory with a machine turned panel just above a long red armrest. A three-spoke steering wheel has a chrome horn ring running most of the way around it. The dash board has a central mounted speedometer with fuel and temp gauges below it while the tachometer and a clock flank it in their own round pods on either side. A machine turned panel runs across the center of the dash and contains the control knobs for the lights and ventilation system which includes air conditioning. The factory AM radio with both Town and Country settings sits in the middle just below a Thunderbird badge on the upper dash pad and above the shifter for the automatic transmission mounted in the floor. Pop the hood and you will find a couple nice features that were added to the 56 year-model cars. Those would be the 312 cubic inch engine, and a 12-volt electrical system. The 312 upped the horsepower to 225 when matched with the 3-speed automatic transmission, and the 12-volt electrical system made for easier starting as well as better lighting and improved visibility. This is the original drivetrain in the car and there are signs of that like the valve cover decals that have a survivor patina to them. There is a unique air filter housing designed to capture fresh air from the hood scoop and signs of good regular maintenance. The chassis received a fresh set of shocks both front and rear as well as new sway bar links and bushings. The car rides on 205/75R15 white wall tires all around mounted on red steel wheels with chrome hub caps. Come on down and check this car out. If you are the one to keep its wheels turning, it would be good for the car, and good for your soul.

We are excited to offer for sale in our Gateway Classic Cars Saint Louis Showroom this first generation Ford Thunderbird. The Ford Thunderbird began life in February 1953 in direct response to Chevrolets new sports car, the Corvette. Production of the Thunderbird began later on in 1954 on September 9 with the car beginning sales as a 1955 model on October 22, 1954 and sold exceptionally well in its first year; outselling theCorvette by more than 23-to-one for 1955 with 16,155 Thunderbirds sold against 700 Corvettes. With the Thunderbird considered a success, a few changes were made to the car for 1956. The most notable change was moving the spare tire to a continental-style rear bumper in order to make more storage room in the trunk and a new 12-volt electrical system. Youll be happy to hear that this low (actual) mileage classic Thunderbird has been held by the same family for nearly three decades and was stored for most of that time. The interior and body were repainted in 2016, but these are still the original panels, engine, and interior components. The smooth drive of one of Fords most beautiful designs is a standard 312 cu in (5.1 L) V8 that was engineered to produce 245 horsepower (183 kW). With its classic look, colors, lines, white-wall tires, and low body, this Thunderbird is a great find and will a its next owner very proud to have and to hold onto.
