This 1954 Mercury Monterey Gasser isnt a car for just anyone, but the guys who were there know that it represents a special time in hot rod history that well never see again. Nostalgia being what it is, this cool hardtop fairly accurately re-creates the early 60s drag race experience in a slightly more user-friendly form that you can actually drive and enjoy on the street today. With a frame-off built and more than $40,000 in receipts, this wasnt a half-hearted project but rather a labor of love. If you were there, you will instantly recognize the look and while you dont see many Mercury Gassers, it certainly looks good dressed for combat. The body was smoothed and straightened, with many of the details being removed, including the door handles, side trim, and hood scoop/ornament. Nevertheless, its still easy to spot its Mercury DNA, from the faired-in headlights to the distinctive shape of the rear fender and quarter panels, to the taillights, which are some of the most beautiful of the era. The paint has a good shine, almost too good to be a race car, but thats kind of the point with this car. Theres not much chrome, and even the rear bumper has been painted to give it an industrial-strength look. Really, the only thing missing is some door art and a few larger sponsor decals, and suddenly its 1962 all over again. At first glance, youd think this is race car throughout, but then you notice just how beautifully crafted the interior really is. Sure, there are race-grade bucket seats with 5-point harnesses and a roll cage, but theres also a beautifully stitched headliner, gorgeous door panels that look straight out of the 50s, and a bright red dashboard with plenty of chrome trim. A custom billet aluminum insert hoses a full array of gauges and theres a monster tach up top where itll do the most good. As a nod to civility, theres also a center console with cup holders and an AM/FM/CD stereo system with remote control. The windows are Lexan and can be completely removed and the trick shifter manages a PowerGlide 2-speed automatic transmission, which has long been the transmission of choice for drag racers. The trunk isnt for storage any longer, now housing a custom fuel cell and a pair of auxiliary jerry cans, just in case. The original Y-block just wouldnt hold up to the stresses of the track, so theres a more familiar 283 cubic inch Chevy V8 in its place. With an .030 overbore, 9:1 compression, high output heads, and an Edelbrock intake and 4-barrel carburetor, its plenty potent but also docile enough to be friendly on the street. It runs on pump gas and definitely has a race-ready look with heavy-duty ignition wires and chrome open-element air cleaner. Red paint on the block is a nod to its FoMoCo history, but thats the only thing Blue Oval under the hood. The aforementioned PowerGlide feeds what might be the original 3.59-geared rear end, which hangs on leaf springs augmented with traction bars. Speedway Motors supplied the straight axle kit and theres a Vega steering box which works well. Disc brakes, custom fender well headers and side pipes, and modern shocks add up to a car thats traditional but still usable. Weld skinnies and fat Torque Thrusts have that old-school look and carry suitable big-n-little radials to complete the look. This car isnt for everyone, we know that. But if you were there and respect the era, this car will take you back without forcing you to go full race. Call today!

With its cool coordination, unique style, a touch of hot rod flair, and averaging less than 1,200 miles annually, this 1954 Mercury Monterey is a distinct and attention-grabbing cruiser offered at quite a nice price. Mercurys just seem to always get noticed on the classic car scene. As the premium end of Fords lineup, these upper-level Monterey coupes were offered exclusively as hardtops, and they showcased this style with brightwork surrounding every inch of this pillarless roof. And speaking of brightwork, those bumpers prove they are true chrome kings with a shine so mirror-like that the ladies will use it to check their makeup. The other reason why theyll be thinking about applying lipstick is thanks to the glossy red paint. There was a recent professional application of Bittersweet red, and it has a level of luster that is exactly what you want on a 50s cruiser like this. And the black roof has just as much gloss to create a terrific two-tone. As you look closer it this coupe, it even gets the details right with the full-length sweeping side trim, factory wheel covers, and the bright hood ornament integrated into the hood design. The sale even comes with the rear fender skirts to ensure you look like a proper 1950s premium street machine. The same red and black two-tone you love on the exterior is continued inside the coupe. It looks especially nice on the door panels where the streak of black is equal parts premium and sporty. The same goes for the two-tone seats that have plenty of room to carry family and friends. And while this is a great premium cruiser for everyone, its the driver who gets to enjoy this the most. Thats why you not only got the artful steering wheel and long speedometer, but also the space between those has all the essential controls. And in a cool interior like this, the additions of the auxiliary gauge trio and Hurst floor shifter heighten the Saturday night cruiser feeling. Under the hood is something special. 1954 was the debut of Fords new V8 the Y-block that would make cars like the Thunderbird famous. This 256 cubic-inch displacement was only available in a Mercury and only in 1954. Plus, this one is also topped by the correct Holley four-barrel downdraft carburetor. So this motor is not only a great one to talk about, but its a great powerhouse for driving. You have a glasspack-style dual exhaust that gives this V8 a nice tone, and the three-speed manual transmission gives you good control over it all. Add in power steering and power brakes, and this is a terrific period-correct cruiser. Complete with owners manual, this is the distinctive classic thats a well-coordinated balance of premium and sporty. And at a price like this, you know this total package is irresistible. The Mercury marque went from a sophisticated and well-appointed Ford, to a market sensation by 1949 distinctly separating itself from Ford and Lincoln. Fast forward to 1954 and you will see the first year introduction of the Overhead Valve V8 replacing the flathead forever. That same year, Mercury rolled out a special Hardtop model in their upscale Monterey body called the Sun Valley. It featured a unique Plexiglas roof and attractive body trim, with a host of available options making it the most expensive model they offered next to the convertible. Only 9,761 were produced, and finding one in this condition presents a wonderful opportunity to Mercury collectors everywhere! 1954 Mercury Monterey Info: We are proud to offer this gorgeous 1954 Mercury Monterey Sun Valley 2-door Hardtop finished in factory code correct Bloomfield Green & Parkland Green two tone exterior over green & white vinyl interior! Its far less commonly seen than many of its counterparts and as chock-full of modded mid-50s style as youre likely to find. This 1954 Mercury Monterey offers the opportunity to own a rare vintage cruiser that ably combines modern components upping its dependability factor to go along with some great custom touches blending perfectly with its nostalgia-inducing aesthetics. Sporting a great array of exterior fittings, this is one very stylish ride. It so thoroughly represents its era that you can easily picture it cruising down the main thoroughfare of Anytown USA, passing by a theater whose marquee displays On the Waterfront as pedestrians give it an admiring nod. Its black paint is looking solid - this car has been thoroughly configured for driving, as opposed to being gawked at while at a standstill, so you will find some subtle signs of real world use, though certainly nothing to diminish your enthusiasm. Very much in keeping with the styling sensibilities of its time, body trim is in abundance here, surrounding the windshield and side windows and running the lengths of the sides, starting with a pair of great looking Mercury badges just above the front wheels - all of it in nice shape. The Mercuries of this era sported some seriously beefy, rugged bumpers both fore and aft, and the examples here are absolutely awesome, table straight and well finished, with the rear bumper displaying its scripted Mercury badging that looms over a pair of perfectly positioned tailpipes. Just above, the spare tire cover features subtle but dramatic pinstriping, a great finishing touch. Inside the doors, custom elements have been added to the interior features this Mercury began life with to make for a seriously inspired driving environment. The seating mixes vinyl and cloth to good effect, with buckets up front that are plushly padded for comfort while straddling a sizable fold-down armrest, with a custom center console just in front that carries an AM/FM/CD/Cassette stereo - therell be no shortage of audio options here - as well as a modern navigation system. The dash area is a show-stopper, featuring an assortment of gold-rimmed AutoMeter gauges with parchment colored backgrounds and a suitably classic-looking font that sit in a distinctive, textured instrument cluster just behind a group of custom controls in back of the steering wheel. Modern air conditioning has been added in the form of a Vintage Air system with underdash vents to keep you and your passengers comfortable on the road. The trunk area in back is substantial, lined with tan carpeting to match the interior, with a period-correct jack recessed into the floor. Below the hood, a 302 cubic inch V8 sits in place of the original powerplant, carrying a 4-barrel Edelbrock carb thats covered by a chrome air cleaner. Long tube headers have been added to the mix to reduce back pressure while providing a nice, authoritative tone out of the dual exhaust. Things are nice and tidy inside the engine compartment and the recently added brake booster provides an extra measure of dependability. It comes to a stop promptly and power steering makes it easy to navigate on its 15 stock Buick wheels that have been outfitted with Coker Classic whitewalls for a great vintage look. Below, the undercarriage appears unusually solid for a car of this age - even one considerably newer, for that matter - sporting straight suspension components and floor pans showing no issues. This 1954 Mercury Monterey will afford its next lucky owner the chance to get behind the wheel of a great-looking classic, thats been equipped with some modern upgrades for enhanced drivability.
