1949 Chevrolet Fleetline Deluxe The 1949 Fleetlines were a sight to see with their polished rounded grilles, low-profile hoods and smooth fenders, but unfortunately their engines were throwbacks from the mid-1940s. Though the Fleetline was a bit advanced in some ways, at a time when many competitors still used outmoded L-head valve configurations, the Fleetlines overhead-valve, 216.5ci straight-six was more advanced. This restored example of the Fastback Deluxe 4-Door, is in drive away condition, has beautifully done interior, and repainted exterior. Chrome and stainless trim adorn the 2-tone body and surround the windows and bumper areas. The 3-speed manual transmission is vacuum assisted, and the three on the tree can be effortlessly moved from gear to gear. A true 1940s design, and a beautifully sculpted rolling piece of Detroit Iron. Exterior Light tan with everything white above the necktie area, adorn a metal roof and show minimal areas of overspray, but is in overall beautiful condition. 4 massive but easily opened and closed doors offer easy access to the large interior. Brightwork seen throughout even trims the fuel access door, and shows beautifully in front grille areas, as well as stainless steel trim on front fender directly behind wheels. Stainless steel is also seen on the rear fender directly in front of the skirts. A dual front windscreen is supported by a center column, also in chrome. Chrome dish hubcaps with Chevrolet bow tie logo in red are in each end of each wheel which have matching light tan steel wheels. A wonderful Deluxe Red Bakelite Hood Ornament Interior A sea of fabric covered bench seats are in the front and rear of the vehicle. They are trimmed with dark piping and have vinyl bottom panels. Door panels are covered in matching fabric and lower third in vinyl, and chrome handles are all in good condition. The felt headliner shows no wear and compliments the dark contrasting brown carpet on the floor throughout. A metal Art Deco styled dash holds a beautiful vertical ribbed chrome speaker cover, as well as a vertically oriented push button AM radio, with patina cream Bakelite buttons throughout the radio and various knob trims. A massive circular speedometer as well as other gauges surrounding it at edges of speedometer, had a great Art Deco look to the numbering and lettering. An original steering wheel, also Bakelite, is worn with many drives and turns it obtained throughout its life. Drivetrain A 216ci inline 6-cylinder engine with its 3-1/2-inch bore and 3-3/4-inch stroke, produces approximately 90hp at 3,300 rpm while breathing through a single-barrel Carter carb which was joined exclusively to a column-shifted three-speed synchromesh manual transmission which is vacuum assisted to make changing gears effortless. An arm front suspension, and solid axle with semi elliptic springs in rear are seen as well as drum brakes on all wheels. This bestselling car for Chevrolet for many years, a massive automobile, has beautiful lines, and strategically placed brightwork, as well as two-tone finish to make it a real 40s head turner. Like everything else in this era, larger was better, and the more metal, the better. This writer can imagine rolling down the interstate, radio on with the sweet sounds of Woody Herman on the radio and the faint sound of the smooth-running engine, and tires humming on the concrete. It is indeed a wonderful life!
